In the show she was talking about he was hidden behind the drums. All you could see were his shadows on the back of the stage. I am not sure how this makes him an attention whore in any way. When I think of attention whore I think more along the lines of Fred Durst. Most of Tool's show was based around the music and the large screens in the background, not Maynard.

quote:
I just hate all the lame Tool fans I see all the time. They're like "TOOL IS GOD! I LOVE U TOOL! I WANNA SUCK MAYNARDS PENIS!" I mean come on....really.
They have fans like that of almost every band. How is that Tool's fault. And most o those fans had never heard of Tool until Lateralus came out and they started getting radios to play their music.

Wasn't this actually a song already? Ænema - Hooker with a Penis

Alot of my friends have been listening to Tool since Opiate. I can say they are of the mentality of "OMG!!!! LEMME SUCK HIS DICK!!"

I like tool, i just don't worship them. A couple of songs are alright.

actually of all the people i know, tool is more popular then britney, nsync, and backstreet combined.

you all are confusing airplay with popularity. respect or cult-like status seems to come from the lack of airplay. that makes them uber-cool i guess *shrug*

So if an artist has an art show he's an attention whore? If an actor is in a play he's an attention whore? Has it gotten to the point where musicians must be ashamed of playing their music to a crowd? Playing live is the heart of all music. Not some studio where the band members don't even have to be in the same room. Where music can be so overworked that it doesn't even sound like the original band.

Im not saying being a rabid fan is bad, but to go as far as to say one band or one group is the best thing ever in the world of music is a little stupid. And thats what most Tool fans do, they're like "Adam Jones is god! I want to have his babies and fist myself to prison sex!" or whatever...yeah. I hate that.

EXACTLY. I think that is what it is that is annoying. these bands come packaged--prepackaged--to sell.

a lot of kids in these bands love music, but are willing to do anything that their told to fulfill their dreams of making music, and they lose themselves. it's sad. I watched making the band once, it was awful, don't ask why i watched it and don't judge me by it, but i felt REALLY sorry for them.

anyway, point is, they radio stations play this and big record companies push it. MTV sits around and says what are we goign to play and push, regardless of quality but for sex appeal. and the majoriyt of people hate it, but it is candy coated goodness that teens with jobs and disposable income will buy, and it can market well.

what is frustrating is the forced airplaywhether or not it is good, pleasurable music.

Re: worpshipping lack of airplay--this is easy to do. to glorify obscurity. Chips Jr. already addressed this and i agree.

It is silly. keep loving your band even when they get a following.

um...and i still believe in the cycling in and out of pop vs. dark music.

i think that "THE MAN" keeps pushing crappier and crappier music down our throats til the consumer revolts, throws off their cloaks of shame, turns off the radio, or makes demand for "alternative" type stations so high, that they come into being and reap the rewards of answering consumer demand.

but then these are bought out and corporatized, and the music turns bubbly, soft and mushy cookie cutter and is rejected.

we aren't rejecting the entertainer. we are rejecting what capitalism does to an art form and the sheer near unavoidability of it as it plays in malls, on the streets, in teh middle of the super bowl.

and so it goes and so it goes

but you are right, we can turn off Empty TV. however, sometime it is more fun to mock MTV and bitch about what the world is coming to and feel superior: to recount how the Dead Kennedy's gave a big fuck you to the monolith with "MTV GET OFF THE AIR" and were not played on the network again for another 10 + years...

Also, I lived in ahosue that got Much TV (Canadian version) about 2+ years ago. As i recall, at that time it was a lot better than MTV, playing a lot of local music and actually playing MUSIC most of the time. The VJs seemed to actuall be playing stuff they liked, rather than they pretended to like and mocked in underhanded ways. has that changed?

bye.

I suppose no one is shoving down your throat if you don't watch TV, listen to the radio, read the newspaper or any magazines, or experiencing any other sort of media outlet.

part of the lashing out against pop music is resentment at the inability to take part in popular culture, i think. it's understandable.

I'm sorry. That was truly beyond the boundaries of good taste. I would never do anything to ruin the friendship we've worked so hard to build over the past year and a half. I love everything about you. I even love the way your little nostrils flare when you're angry.

I offer this picture of Justin Timberlake boxing as an apology.

I almost never watch tv, its not a big loss, the only time I listen to the radio is when I am working(and not even always then) and it's mostly just background noise. As far as the paper goes, I read the editorials, news stories as in real news, not who such and such celeb is fucking now, cause I don't care. I watch movies every now and then. Magazines? no, I rarely read those unless I'm on the shitter at so and so's house or it's a pc mag. One can experience media outlets however without being inundated in pop culture, provided one is a bit choosy about their media. Personally I feel if you prefer to flop on the couch in front of the tv and watch mindless drivel, you've only got yourself to blame.

THanks, SWOT, that was truly beautiful. I am touched.

or i'm touching my self what's with the picture, I don't know which.

Mord: i used to agree with you 100%. I used to BE you! but then, i was on the internet, and I got an offer through priceline for free magazines (I think it was priceline). and they had all this shit i didn't want like parenthood, better homes and gardens, Elle, cosmo. what to do?? so i picked rolling stone and I picked what i thought was a News magazine, U.S. Weekly.

TUrns out it was US weekly (capitalized, but really it is us weekly)_ a cheap, taudry, stupid massively consumed entertainment magazine. see, i was out of touch with pop culture. I did not know any of this. I didn't know the boy band names, i didn't know who britney spears was, i didn't know christina aguilera, I didn't know nicole was married to tom cr uise, i didn't know NOTHIN!

so anyway, i get the mag and i'm utterly embarrassed, but i got really interested! Thing is, you can hold and carry on conversations with just about anyone about this crap. it is something that society has in common. it's sort of like guys and sports. Guys I know that don't like sports follow sports anyway because it is socially expected. that way, with men they don't know--girlfriend's fathers, guys in the boardroom--it gives them a leg up, something to bond over. The same with pop culture.

People thar are like i used to be "I don't watch tv, i'm too good for it." bull shit. if you watched it, and got INTO it you'd like it. you'd boob out like the rest of it. You don't watch it cause you know you can't HANDLE it. You've convinced yourself you hate it but really you would you would boob out! that's why you don't watch tv. not cause you're too good, rather because your too weak! I'm too weak. i had a roommate that got me watching and i watched too much with her, now i can't do it at all! had to say NO MAS! I'm too weak to even be on a forum, look how much retarded time i spend here. Soon, i'll have to pull back and make it something i just don't do anymore cause i lack self control i suppose.

THAT was a tangent. point is (aside from my many weaknesses), people that say they "DOn't watch tv" come off as ivory tower intellectuals out of touch with society, and often they will get out of touch with mainstream society and unable to understand movements. it is good to stay in touch with the pulse of the nation an pop movements. I also believe it is wise not to get wrapped up in it and to watch as an outsider looking in cause that shit will corrupt you corrupt your soul.

but it is good to keep your finger on the world pulse, i think, if mildly painful.

No, no, don't mistake me, if there is a tv around, and it's on, it will eat my attention. That is why I don't own one myself, and I don't care for them, I don't like what it does to me. Adbusters had some tstuff on their site(or was it a link?) a while back, before I started hanging out here anyways on television and the effects of watching it has on you. I'm not gonna look for it at the moment but maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about and can find a link.

Indigo, I don't know you, but I'm getting to really like you.

" You go, girl!," says the white woman who should know better than to attempt to borrow black language but only does so because she does it with enough self-deprecating sarcasm, in much the same manner of a fairly decent drag queen imitating the current Miss America.
