Wow.

Good article.

I'm not finished with it yet, but I like the idea behind the test.

Good link, Mord.

sexilent, even.

Good proof that TV rots the brain. Do you think this forum rots the brain too? I know that WOTA-Chat does. conversations in there go like this (an actual quote without names)
-hey
-oh
-g'day
-hullo
-don't use hers
-wow this is like talking to god; all echos
-it's a trick
-oh

Really deep, isn't it? I'm telling you, it ROTS THE BRAIN!

And thanks, missphinx, that's high praise. I'm too newbie to mock your name, aren't I. how sad. it just reminds me of an 80's video game like MissPacman...

Okay, a couple more things.

Does it have to be that we have a pre-set conception that we either enjoy or dislike pop music? I really don't think if you just let it in that you'd enjoy it. I try to let all types of music in, and not a lot of pop music really grabs me in any way. The lyrics are bland, the bands all sing the same types of songs, etc. If it sounds different then I'll give it a listen. However, if you think we're all gonna start buying Backstreet and NSYNC albums if we sit down and allow the music to saturate our souls, you're wrong. If you think I'll even give in to the latest from Creed, Linkin Park, and Staind, which is at least rock, I can't do it due to the same reasons as stated above. People aren't idiots, just many people aren't interested in music beyond a simplistic pop level.

And yes, you can shut off all the media outlets, including the internet. You can do many things. I do happen to enjoy my media outlets on occassion as I'm sure many of you do and if you give them a look they are over-saturated with pop culture. That was my point.

Tool is cool, Tool has a commercial for Lateralus.

oh puleeez!!!!!

TOOL are not pop! they may be gaining more airtime and there might be a comercial for them in the U.S. but they are not pop. Pop is Britney and the boybands, ok lets get that straight.

If TOOL were pop they would have a gazillion photo shoots, their faces would be all over the place, they are musicians, that is how they earn there living, to earn more they promote themselves, their is nothing wrong with this when you've been around for as long as TOOL have, over ten years just in case you don't know. Pop acts do not last ten years. The boyzone/westlife manager was on Tv here not to long back and said that most boybands have a shelf life of five years.

every signed band has t-shirts. this is just like when mrtallica released the black album and everyone said theryre selling out, when all they did was take a new direction. I don't think Lateralus was that different to Aenima, its more produced but not by much, its more percussive, there are more vocal overdubs, but this doesn't mean that they are N Sync!

so just please shut up with the TOOL are pop ramblings. and please get out of the frame of mind that real bands don't promote themselves. Every time a band play a gig they are promoting themselves. The stakes just go up a notch the bigger the band gets.

ive gone onstage and sung and i am not an attention whore, im not scared of attention, but i don't crave it. what i do crave is the feeling that comes with playing music. if this is what you crave, and you wish to make a living from it you have to perform it so they can hear it.

no actually my avourite member of the band is Danny Carey because is an awesome drummer, yes i would like to meet him, i'd ask him tons of questions about drumming, thats because im a drummer. that probably accounts for a high percentage of my interest in the band.

you don't know me from adam, don't asume anything about me. you are not in a position to do so.

yes im a fan of TOOLs music, and im a fan of Danny Carey. but i'm not a fan in the same way that some young girls are towards their favourite boybands.

and decribe to me what a fan is, becuase i can tell you now that the word 'fan' is far too brief a description for a few thousand people. there are degrees of fandom, go do some reasearch or something. even better go read my bloody essay on the matter, its in sensory overload, you never know it might broaden your horizons, you might actually learn something.

couple of random comments

Be mindful when you find yourself saying, "there is no good new music any more." If you stay in that place, you will soon be the one who only listens to the golden oldies radio station and can't relate to the awful noise that the "kids" listen to.

There's always good new music, but it's pretty rare to find it on television. College radio stations are a useful (cough) tool.

Tool's pretty good. It's difficult for bands when they get popular. Most of them don't deal with the pressure very well.

Good posts- on television. I like tv, but I guess I watch it very consciously (great article Mordecai), and go for long periods without, etc. Yes, it is hypnotizing. As is the internet, in my opinion. As are a lot of things. I think possibly in this incredibly fast-paced culture, it is necessary? to have some of that in our lives, a way of zoning out. Tv is easy.

Also, I have this suspicion that most? people are zombies anyway. I don't know if the general public could deal with large blocks of time in which they would have to actively engage their minds. Hence the popularity of network tv.

I don't consider Britney Spears a person or artist, to me she is just an object and noise to fill a vacuum (the collective empty mind of prepubescents of less than average intelligence)

(you can call me misspacman, Indigo - it's more creative than missphincter )

I think the best thing from this whole thread was the fact that I got massive bitch points. And I do enjoy mocking Tool and the rabid fans, and keep in mind that any replies dont really effect me in any way. Yay for bitch points!

um, i think your tool argument falls flat when you consider that maynard has consistently been up front and honest with everyone about where his loyalties lie. he has done interviews and even written song lyrics telling his fans that he sold out a long time ago to make music- "i'm the fucking man, and your the man as well", as he so eloquently puts it.

which is the truth.

but you don't like tool, so you wouldn't know that.

goat, you can't put music down when you don't even listen to it. i could understand if you sat down with an open mind and listened to the albums, one by one, then decided you didn't like it. but you're judging a BAND by their FANS. would it be any different for me to judge you based on, say, your brother? if i met your brother and didn't like him, is it fair for me to say that i probably wouldn't like you as well?

i am a hypocrite of this. i think we all are. hell, you'll never see me sit down and listen to nsync before i judge them. but it's something to think about.

If Tool is anything, they are not pop. hehehe You haven't listened to that much of their music, have you? Just because something different gets played on the radio doesn't mean that it's suddenly brought under the umbrella of mercenary instrumental effluent that we know as 'pop'.

Tool are a band that thinks. Hence the name. Do you think it's a coincidence that they chose the name 'Tool' without realizing that all of their fans who wear shirts, hats, medallion, fuzzy undies and the likes will be labeled 'Tool'? I'm certain it's deliberate. It's not because they're disdainful of their fans... just some of them.

I have several of their shirts. And I think they look fuckin' cool.
