inspired to action

Did you ever hear a song, see a flick, read a book, that moved you to do... something, anything?

if so, what was it and what did you do?

Watching the movie Pulp Fiction with a rowdy KU crowd 9 months after its release prompted my ambitions from wanting to be a lawyer (come from a family of lawyers) to wanting to be a writer.

This is kind of funny, but I used to watch this Jewel Unplugged video from VHI, which I'd taped, over and over again.

This helped me considerably with my ability to compose and to "simplify"/not take so seriously my music. It's odd how much this video changed me, although it's certainly not the only thing.

The Who's "Quadrophenia" got me to switch from bass to guitar (no offense, John Entwistle), which, was a good decision for me.

The internet in general prompted me to start writing.

Falling asleep listening to Alice in Chains Unplugged promted me to break up with my girlfriend - big mistake.

Etc.

How about you, Miss Sara?

Well, a lot of "A Hero Of Our Time" by Mikhail Lermontov, which I was reading at the time, has made its way into my Merc character, when I was forming his mindset... but that's the only influence I could probably CONSCIOUSLY trace that comes to mind.

How did falling asleep to AIC Unplugged prompt you to break up with your girlfriend?! Did the lyric "It's over now" get stuck bouncing around in your head and the first thing you said when you woke up was, "It's over now?" (I'd really like to hear the story behind this )

Marilyn Manson and Alice In Chains prompted me to do some song writing of my own. I would do anything to have Layne Staley's voice.

Often times music I hear can help modivate or influence my decision process.

most recently, the radio station I listen to at work plays this song at least one a day... which is ok cos I've always liked it.

but recently the lines;
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

seems more poingant. :spin:

Get Jerry Cantrell to sing backup.

That's probably about 80% of it.

Nope. Listen to Mad Season's album "Above." Layne still sounds good without Cantrell.

They just had that harmony thing going on.

Jerry Cantrell looks like he's lost a bit of weight.

I almost bought blonde hair dye after seeing "Desperately Seeking Susan"

(SHOCKING SHOCKING SHAME SHAME SHALLOW SHEEP)

I chickened out though. Went home and glopped some more henna on my head instead.

Besides that, the list is too long to start on. Everything.

Reading Dave Barry's "Bad Habits" once a month for the first two years of high school made me a smart-ass.

I'm not certain why - I just remember waking up with the "killer is me" playing, dialing the number, and taking a normal day into the depths of poopy-shit.

It wasn't a lyric - My theory: I think that Staley's voice fucked with my dreams in some way. It's such a soft, but intense album, and I remember that I had a lot of rather disturbing dreams that gave me this strange sense of myself being trapped in something addictive, ie. the relationship.

So I called her up, broke my "habit." I honestly think that I was frightened of an addiction, which, is exactly the desparate sense that Staley's voice imparts.

Digression: And SP's right - Staley's voice is autonomously excellent - he doesn't need Cantrell (ego king) to back him up.

Just listen to "Again" and "Shame in You" off of self-titled.

End Digression.

Thanks, SP, for the curiousity

And, to pitch it back, has TMBG or Soul Coughing/Mike Doughty influenced any behaviour in yourself? Your writing style seems to have an influence there (in a good way, obviously) ?

Cheers!

I was going to simply put "missphinx" in my "Things we remember here" thread. I was curious if anybody remembered her. She had been very nice to me when I first came here and started in with all my bullshit. I believe I had one of my very first conversations with her here. Of course, this was so long ago that I can't really be sure. But I do know that I liked her and I think she was okay with what I was doing.

I wish we had access to the Stile Project archives. I wonder whatever became of Jay Stile, which, of course, was a pseudonym.
