This morning was disgustingly muggy and hot. From inside the sky looks nice and blue, but from the road you can see this cloud of humidity hanging over the city. It looks like smog, but it doesn't get smoggy here. It gets wet disgusting heat ugh.

It's only 81 degrees here. 88% humidity.

Hot and sunny day here, which means I have to try and concentrate on my work while a constant stream of scantily clad lasses bicycle past me window.

It also makes avoiding drinking beer all the more difficult.

I hate it.

You can get granite as low as $30 per square foot. It ranges well in to the 100's. Origination, color and veining will set the price.

edit: If you are after a small piece, go to a countertop shop that deals with granite and shop their scrap yard. you can find pieces big enough to do vanity tops at very reasonable prices as they are left overs.

I'm loveable to all.

Cruise, I'm looking at fitting out a kitchen with stone so shall have to go the traditional route of being financially raped with a smile on my face.

Not necessarily. Go to the countertop place where they make the countertops for all of the kitchen places in town. Look through their racks. They all have slabs of granite that other customers may not be interested in. You may find something you really like in there. When you buy granite from us, you are getting a great deal but cannot pick your own slab. When you buy from the manufacturer, you pay a bit more but get to hand select your slab. If you can find something in their "extra" pile that you like, you can walk out with a great deal.

Wherever you buy it, make sure you get a good installer. Tell them you want to see some of their work. Good installers will have past customers that allow them to showoff their work or they will have excellent portfolios. Paying big $$$'s for granite and getting a shitty installation is a bad combination.

Home Depot here seemed to be saying that you could view the slab before buying it. If I need it at all, it'll be because I'm getting a house built, so I'll also ask the builder what he thinks, I guess.

Make sure you check the builder's prices. A lot of contractors go with certain vendors on supplies due to convenience to themselves and not necessarily due to price. If the salesperson from the local lumber yard is giving your contractor kickbacks and incentives, chances are he's not looking at the bottom line for your best interest. If he gives you allowances for different things, you can shift money out of certain allowances in to other categories to buy what you want. Any builder worth a damn will also let you source your own lighting, plumbing and other fixtures. Beware those who make you choose from their special collection.

Oh, and milder today, light breeze, the sky is deliciously grayish and for once in what feels like a while I don't feel like I'm trying to breathe in hot soup on my smoke breaks.

All the stuff in the allowances (which includes the surfaces and all the other stuff you're talking about) we can buy from wherever we want, move it around, get a refund on the total if we don't spend them all. The deal on plumbers is that the connections are already factored into the total price (as it was with the other quotes), as is the electrics (although more sockets cost 32 bucks a go).

Up to 7 inches of snow on the high ground (above 1500 feet; I think that I'm at about 1100 feet, so no snow for me yet).

I'm just under 1000 feet above sea level, apparently, after all. So, just plenty of rain.
