sookee, it warmed up today, but I think the trees may be goners.

mudded, you're right about that. on the other hand, I was up in new England when it hit 85 degrees 3 days in a row and they shut down school because it was too hot. I thought "damn! it doesn't get below 85 in the summer night"

Good luck with the snow/ice mags. Hopefully it moves out as fast as it came in.

My office actually closed today due to weather - as did all of the county offices. I look out the window right now, and it's a clear day.

That said, they're saying it will get bad in the afternoon.

The really funny part was the email we got yesterday about our "increment" weather policy. (This is a law office!)

This ought to be fun. This town dies on the vine if the temperature gets below freezing and there is any precipitation. Right now it is 25 degrees on my porch, and there is a very light freezing mist with occasional snowflake coming down. The highway dept has closed the main north-south freeway through town because the overpasses might have a bit of ice on them.

ditto here - last week's freeze saw upwards of ten big accidents in an hour during evening traffic on the mississippi river bridge due to ice. they shut down everything. right now the leading edge is less than 60 miles away and they're telling people to hurry up and go home.

So all the county offices were closed yesterday, and are supposed to reopen at 12 noon today. (Our office goes by the county closures, so it's the same for me.) They said we were supposed to get a whopping 2-4 inches of snow. We got a light dusting, and that's it. Disappointing.

High, thin overcast sky, and 14 degrees on my porch. Damned cold, by most standards - catastrophically cold by local standards. The local plumbers are going to make a killing.

Brrr! -11 We got a light dusting of snow last night that adds to the 7 inches still on the ground. I took a broom to sweep the front steps off and within minutes it felt as if my ears and nose were gonna fall off lol. Fuck that snow.It can stay!

So I finally wandered outside... the road is like a skating rink. The snow is frozen solid.

This is... interesting.

I was looking at pictures on CNN of the snow that Atlanta got, and their headline talked of "A rare winter storm hatched a nightmare traffic jam that paralyzed parts of the South — especially the city of Atlanta — that is ongoing, nearly 24 hours after it began." Christ, what a bunch of fucking whiners! In the pictures you can see grass sticking up under the light dusting of snow that they got. What, 1-2 inches of snow just paralyzed a major city? Turned their highways into parking lots of abandoned cars? People sleeping in the aisles of supermarkets?

What a bunch of pussies. I know some of you live in areas that have gotten much more appreciable snow than that, and temps to match, but has the world ended for you, too? I doubt it, 'cause from what I've read you're much hardier folk than that. But Atlanta seems to have become the national capitol of Nancy's and whiny cunts everywhere. The amount of snow they got is what we'd call up here a light layer.

Bill, I agree on some level... this really is nothing. Leading up to this people were blowing it totally out of proportion. They cleared off the shelves at Wal-mart and other grocery stores, stocked up on things like generators and such that they'll never use again, and generally were talking like it was going to be the end of the world. Those people I laughed at.

However, you have to consider what the effects are on the roads. First, most of the places have little or no infrastructure for salting the roads (or stockpiles of road salt). The snow isn't really the problem so much as the ice. Also, most people in the South have absolutely NO experience driving in ice or snow. So they end up skidding and sliding and wrecking all over the place. It's fucking dangerous to go out on the roads right now.

I can vouch for that. I've driven in snow and ice in Georgia before, and them people down there ain't got a lick of sense when it comes to that.
