Giving your children the informational tools to move forward is important, giving them that knowledge and assets to build upon is even better. Teach em to fish, sure, teach em to fish and give them a fishing pole and bait to go with that knowledge, even better.

FYI girlfriend, I was 31 before I ever had a car payment, ever.

I understand what you are saying.

Do you understand that he doesn't want to go out and buy a 30K corvette?

He wants to build an 8-10K car over the course of 5 years with used swap meet parts and with his bare hands.

Your analogy sucks.

Sure, he needs to learn how to open a 20K credit line on his house, find a 10K property and flip it.

There's prolly not a better way to finance his "project".

However, and take this with a grain of salt, most practicing agents forget how much of a risk this is to the common folk.

It wasn't that long ago that you bought your first property. I'm pretty sure that I remember when you did it.
Had you been without splats income at the time, would you have been able to buy investment property?

This is important, and there are many educational resources available within the U.S. Treasury gateway. One of the best examples of children understanding money resides in Titan, the biography of John D. Rockefeller (IMHO). His early understanding of financing, ingrained by his father, led to his financial domination later in life.
Personally, I differentiate between investments and legacies. As an avid investor I never marry assets, when they reach a target value (+ or -) I dump them. But I have a little pillow, it was in my crib when I came home from the hospital, and it has been recovered many times by family members......I plan to die with it under my head, and bequeath it to a relative. Probably along with a few million dollars.

And it's really eating me cause I feel like I NEED to do this.

Even if you don't build it, you can be old and really cool at the same time.

Aside from that, I don't believe you when you say you "need" to do it. Having a mid-life crisis is about dealing with the realization of one's mortality- by contributing something to the grand human experiment that only you as an individual can contribute. If you build a car that happens to go slightly faster than most other cars in its class, are you really contributing that much? And why? To show the younger generations that cars can go fast? I'm in no position to give you advice LF, but [insert cliche] if you really want to contribute something, then well, you know.

I want to build a model t with a dependable fuel injected v8 not even blown.
It's easy to do and fast isn't really my #1 priority but it would still be plenty fast!
But the whole I built it thing with help with my kids is what's really important.
I probably wouldn't even be comfortable driving it!

I'm not a gearhead, but I do understand the desire to create excellence. I believe that Plum has some kind of idea on the relative importance of one's contributions to what he calls "the human experiment". My sentiments are different. You get one time around LF, and even if you get more than that, you probably won't remeber this trip, anyway, so do what you have to do with the time you have.
anyway, good luck, geezer.

LF have you thought about building some furniture. Wood (even high quality) is fairly cheap by the boardft......aquire woodworking tools little by little.

Be sure to pay a little extra to get the "vicious" look (like the bears you see all the time), rather than the "where did I put my pants?" you get if you're extra cheap.

Have you thought about taking the whole family on a tour of the Philippines and showing your kids first hand their family history. It's something they will never forget as long as they live.

My Dad took me on a trip through Mexico when I was 14 and we literally drove up one side and down the other of Mexico and all points in between....there is not a single fucking city of note or merit in Mexico that I have not been to. There's a brand of Jalapeno Peppers called "Clemente Jaques" I know exactly where they are grown and have stayed at the Hacienda next door with the original Aquaduct still carrying water to the plantation. I've eaten fresh "Ceviche" in Vera Cruz. I've seen Mexico City. all of it..... good and bad...... from the slums to the mansions. I even remember what a few of the statues look like while driving down "Paseo De La Reforma" the main drag that runs straight as an arrow through the heart of Mexico City.

We were not Mexican but lived in Dallas, Texas and so it was like going to a another world for about 2 months. That memory of that time together with my father will always be with me.

Tell some relatives you want these kids to know about their Filipino family history. Have giant LF family reunions. Go Everywhere and do Everything. This memory for the family and your children will last long after you have passed away my friend.

Leaving a Hot Rod is cool but with the trip you ALL get to do this together.

Cheers

My dad and older brother went to the Philipines a few years back. I was so fucking jealous. I got a tribe of family there.
It wouldn't be safe today though, with the taliban on the south side and shit.
It would be something though. Really something.

I've come to believe that most procreation these days is in fact an act of selfishness. The vast majority of parents don't give a second thought to the state the world will be in when their children become adults(especially when you consider the ones doing the most polluting tend to also be doing the most procreating).

Many mothers especially only have kids because of peer pressure- they would feel left out and have little to talk about with their friends if not for children. Some of it's also the worst reason imaginable: the turning away from adult life out of fear or inability to cope, and the futile attempt to relive an ideal fantasy of childhood innocence.
