Living without a car - My situation and pleas for help.

I'm looking at the ~$550 I can save every month as incentive to rid myself of a car.

A few points in positive
- I live in a major city with transportation options
- I don't get out on roadtrips enough. If need be, i could easily rent a car for such an activity
- I can take transportation to and from my work.
- I would save hella money
- I would not support terrorists
- Parking around me sucks the balls.

A few points in the negative
- I just bought this car
- I like this car
- I like the ability to get in a drive anywhere
- Would have to take trains to visit anyone in the burbs...but then again, do I really want to?
- When in a vehicle, I prefer to be the driver. I would now have to become a passenger seat bitch. I don't know if i can handle this.

That is where I stand. I look at all the money I spend on this car and how much i actually need it, and it bothers me. 6 or 7 thousand dollars a year I could save. That's more than enough to cover all travel expenses if I needed to rent a car. I could take a massivly amazing trip with the saved money. But I love my car. I love the freedom of having a car.

Please, I need someone who has done this or is currently doing this to give a perspective.

Try not using it for a while, see if you can cope. Grocery shopping is what I've found hardest with no car, but if you have stores close enough to buy what you want every day you need it, then you should be fine.

Selling a car that you just bought sucks, though. Not a new car, I trust?

I live in a place where owning a car is the only option. We have no mass transportation as we really have no "mass."

You could always buy a cheaper car.

Get a beater that only costs $550 total, get only liability insurance, and let it sit and rust while you get around otherwise; and when you need it, pray it starts.

In the city, even a shitheap can be expensive to run, if you have to pay for parking and if liability insurance runs high.

Car is a necessity around here, too, unless you lived right in the center of the main town. My town is pretty spread out, although there is a bus route that passes near my house (the buses are subsidised by the university and people do seem to use them, if only because there's virtually no parking on campus).

Sell the car and buy yourself a half decent motorcycle. They're not a polluting as cars and you'll also save money on fuel. You'll never get stuck in a traffic jam and chicks will think you're the dogs bollocks.

GO GO BIKE!!!

Your photos rather confound that statement I think.

You're still single. Your "getting some" potential is lower if you have to take a date on the bus or the train.

Some sorry freak will throw up on her on the way back to your house.

Actually, you'll need to tell me what sort of car it is before I can really decide. If it's some silly econobox or some jap crap, then yeah, you need to take the bus. I'll let you keep it if it's a real cool car.

It's not that hard to use public transport in a large city. I managed to get around fine in Boston for 8 years with no car.
The only thing that sucked was the T quit running around 1 am.

Looks like a battle of want vs. need. Decide what you need and if what you want is in accordance with that. I mean, if you can get away with getting what you want, then do it. Personally, I'd go car-less. I have a motorcycle only these days and it works out great. Especially living in California where the gas is super expensive (I just saw the guy changing the sign to 3.00 on the corner). My girlfriend has a car, but only uses it for longer trips. She rides the bus to work. It's harder here given that California and moreso, L.A., is a car-dependent culture. But I think you can make it work there in Chicago. Ride the El, fool!

rid yourself of the car, and get a bike-friendly spacious backpack for teh shopping trips.

You need a motor vehicle to escape the confines of the metropolitan heartland. It does not need 4 wheels.

cheers

You'll need the car for when the evacuation order comes. Don't get caught on Lake Shore Drive when the levee breaks and FEMA's nowhere to be found.

the bile will be much better suited for a speedy evacuation. bikes are immune to gridlock.

i've gone for long periods of time without a car...by necessity, choice and circumstance.

in san francisco it's next to impossible to have a car. you're better off without one unless you are wealthy and can afford a garage and valet parking whereever you go.

in some ways not having a car can be more expensive. you can't buy large things and carry them home on your bike or walking as easily, so you'll buy smaller more expensive items.

you should get a car that you can afford and use it only when you need to. i don't get people who buy pricey cars they have to make monthly payments on for years. they usually live at home with their folks i've noticed.

Okay, sell it then. I was hoping it would be a big Dodge turbodiesel truck, or a BMW, or a Tahoe or something.

You can get another car when you can make better choices

But you are not free. You ar chained that car. You do not have the option of taking the train, etc., because you already have the car. That is, you are stuck paying $6k/year just to have the damned thing, and so you are wasting money if you do not use it. So you are spending money because you are spending money.

This is why the things you own end up owning you

Wow. Think of how much it would lessen parking problems and traffic if you had such a little ass car.

Of course, assholes who drive SUVs will point out that it's not safe to be on the road in one of those rollerskates, due to assholes with SUVs.
