Considering all the VW beetle pranks we played in college, a car this small might not be a good idea in a big city after all.

I don't no how your laws are but here in Colorader you don't need to insure this. Hell. You don't even need to register this or even have a plate to this. And operating cost has got to be way down. Some could be had knew for under a grand. And you can park it where bicycles park.
But you no what? Go out there and scope out the bus route and use it to go to work. Do this for two weeks straight. Then decide cause it's a real bummer, man. Buses fucking drain a part of your life. You can store your car too and go to the MVR and render it unoperatable for up to 2 years. Then you don't have to insure it or get in any kind of trouble over it. But then you need a parking space. Bummer, man.

I've had to move my self contained mobile home/band wagon/toolshed from outside my front door cos after six years they've decided that leisure vehicles aren't allowed to park in the city for more than three days in a row.

So I'm going to change the registration back to a person carrying vehicle and give them the big middle finger.

Have to make it a lttle more presentable exhaust wise before I go to the registration people however.

If he only uses it for necessities, then he'll have lots of time to fix things himself and the infrequency of trips will not even make it worth insuring. If he gets fined, the fine would be far less than what he pays for insurance.

What excellent advice, then he can pay $550 a month for the rest of his life without the hassle of owning an automobile after rear ending a roller or something..

I was assuming that he was a good driver, and could evade the cops if necessary.

You are of course correct, plum, but in the context of this post you are completely in the wrong.

I suspect that if he were already inclined to perform maintenance himself, AND if he were inclined not to use it "except for necessities" (recall that in his original post he noted several times how much he enjoys the car, enjoys using it, enjoys having it, period), then this would be a nonissue.

I almost tried to evade the cops once...

I quickly recalled all those police chase videos where the dudes get caught. It's better to just get arrested for really bad speeding that arrested and beat down for running from the law.

I'm smart like that.

Of course, assholes who drive SUVs will point out that it's not safe to be on the road in one of those rollerskates, due to assholes with SUVs.

There have been lots of small cars in years past. When I was in college, my g'father gave me a Subaru 360 van which he got free from Bob Brown Oldsmoblie in Portland, Oregon, for buying a new Olds 98 wagon. Seems the US Dept of Transportation had determined that they were unsafe, and the dealers could no longer sell them.

Anyway, the car was basically a miniature vw vanagon in design, small enough to put inside a regular vw van (I know, 3 friends and I did so one day). It had a 2 cylinder horizontally opposed air-cooled 2 stroke engine, displacing 359cc, coupled to a 4 speed transaxle at the rear of the van. Fueled, it weighed 1,200 pounds. I used to park it nose in to the curb between parallel parked american cars, and the rear bumper would be closer to the curb than the drivers side doors of those sedans.

Underpowered, slow, could just barely climb a steep hill at about 10 mph, it's top speed on a flat dry road was 58 mph, if there were no headwind. It was a great personal vehicle at college, as it was painted a flat white which I added the word "Maintenance" in orange decal letters on the doors to, and a 10 foot fiberglass international orange whip antenna with a day-glo orange pennant, and a "slow moving vehicle" placard on the hatch at the rear. I also removed all of the Subaru badging and replaced it with Peterbilt badging.

I could drive/park that damned thing anywhere on campus I wanted to, and never get asked a single question. It was great for driving on the sidewalks on the Quad by the Student Union building.

I drove that thing a lot of places I probably shouldn't have, including all over inside the Spokane World's Fair complex. Coveralls, a clipboard, and a "maintenance" golf cart looking vehicle are great for getting in where no one questions you.

I loved that little box, and was really pissed off when my sister took it one night and clipped off a telephone pole with it, driving drunk. If I could find one, I'd buy it.

Here we call them "invalid wagons", don't need a license to drive them as it goes.

And yet, if you get into a cop chase and manage to outrun and lose them, it will be a thrill that you will take pride in no matter who you are, and you'll cherish the memory for years to come (even though it's very stupid and dangerous). Driving with no license or insurance offers a similar, subsidiary thrill, since you can never be sure just what you will do if the police want to stop you (brake or gas?) until it happens.

Thanks. Want to lend me $3,500 on a 48 month payout?

I didn't explicitly state the caveat to my wish, as I figured most everybody here knows I am broke and on a very limited income, but "affordable" was implied.
