Well, if you don't mind, I'd appreciate it if you'd re-post it here. I would like to continue to examine this stuff.

Interesting how, of late, these traditional lyrics have mutated into more "acceptable" enunciations on many of the sites I checked. For example, "Mammy's" is now "Mama's". To me, that's akin to digitally removing cigarette smoking from old classic movies, etc.

thats song reminds me of the rhubarb pie song

Mamas little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb, Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie. Mamas little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb, Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie.

*I can't help but note the origins of the various publishers on virtually all the relevant sheet music I've found. I think it's interesting and quite telling.

Oh, but surely it was published for the music market in the South. . . .

Bacidath, it ain't hard to connect the dots. All a person need do is a little research. Unfortunately, those dishing out the shit generally can't be bothered with such a trivial pursuit.

Take Illinois, for example, as one of numerous bright 'n' shining beacons of moral superiority. Surely, coon music, jolly nigger banks and Aunt Jemima pancakes were always roundly condemned in The Land O' Lincoln.

Niggerlips

by Martn Espada

Niggerlips was the high school name
for me.
So called by Douglas
the car mechanic, with green tattoos
on each forearm,
and the choir of round pink faces
that grinned deliciously
from the back row of classrooms,
droned over by teachers
checking attendance too slowly.

Douglas would brag
about cruising his car
near sidewalks of black children
to point an unloaded gun,
to scare niggers
like crows off a tree,
he'd say.

My great-grandfather Luis
was un negrito too,
a shoemaker in the coffee hills
of Puerto Rico, 1900.
The family called him a secret
and kept no photograph.
My father remembers
the childhood white powder
that failed to bleach
his stubborn copper skin,
and the family says
he is still a fly in milk.

So Niggerlips has the mouth
of his great-grandfather,
the song he must have sung
as he pounded the leather and nails,
the heat that courses through copper,
the stubbornness of a fly in milk,
and all you have, Douglas,
is that unloaded gun.

From here

Amen.

For a brief period I worked in an antiques shop run by a guy in his early 20s who loved to sit around and argue all day. He specialized in mission and arts and crafts stuff and had the store set up so the front was like a giant living room. He'd have three or four antique dealers stop by and they'd all sit around arguing topics of the day. I think the kid was proud of his ability to bullshit about anything, and he also liked to try out the techniques he was constantly honing to get people to agree with him. He once gave a long explanation that basically someone will tell him something he doesn't agree with, and he will tell them they have it exactly right. Then he will explain what they said in a completely different way that actually reaches the conclusion he agrees with and gives them full credit for their wisdom and intelligence.

Anyways, there was one case in the store where an old couple sold some vintage knick-knacks. There were a few items in there that were old caricature pieces of blacks. I think they were salt and pepper shakers and some kind of jar. A young black couple came in to look around the store and stopped in front of the case. The man found one of the girls who was working and asked to see the owner. He told the owner that they were very upset. They were shocked to see those items for sale, and he really couldn't believe that in this day and age the shop would sell something so distasteful.

The owner listened with grave concern, and then told the man that he was certainly very correct. The pieces were indeed hideous and ugly, and illustrated innumerable prejudices and stereotypes. But were they not history? He certainly was not going to be the one to sweep something so terrible under the rug. No sir, those pieces would sit on that shelf as a reminder of some of the ills in the past. In fact he was glad the gentleman called him over to discuss the pieces, it was exactly the kind of dialog he was hoping they might provoke. He also was happy to point out that his regular buyers of such pieces and the customers most interested in seeing them in the shop, were young affluent blacks like the customer. They enjoyed owning and collecting the pieces as a sign of progress perhaps, or just to own a piece of the history of blacks in this country.

Anyways, he ended up selling the guy the salt and pepper shakers and the guy was laughing and patting him on the back on the way out of the store.

I think he let the crazy old couple sell the occasional coon shakers or Nazi arm band because he hoped someone would get offended and then he could see if he could argue his way out of it (or into a sale).

Your story said a mouthful, DM. It's analagous to the situations from certain quarters that arise from time to time over the display of any flag pertaining to the Confederate States of America. These people are only interested in drawing large attention to their own agendas at the expense of something they claim is offensive, regardless of whether they should truly be offended. This is no different than the opportunities pounced upon when a certain someone dared utter "nappy headed hos" over the air.

Forget the opportunity it might present for rational dialogue and even, heaven forbid, education. Hell no, let's dogpile.

Amen.

This stuff isn't that old either. I still recall my uncle coming back from Florida with a little plastic souvenir, an alligator with a black man's head protruding from it's mouth.
You pulled the head out and it was a pencil.

The Darkey Wizard

Meet John "Darkey Wizard" Banks. "Banks was the Negro Middleweight Champion of the World during the mid 1880s; John made funny contortions with his mouth as he fought; He also snorted, grunted, and yelled; But, he was very clever and carried a good right hand punch . . . ." From here.

Interesting to note where all his matches (according to the above link) occurred. Was he a negro who happened to be the middleweight champion of the world, or was he, as it says, just the "Negro Middleweight Champion of the World"?

Amen.

Meet Satchel Paige, a uniquely remarkable athlete for the ages. He played the prime years of his professional baseball career in the old negro baseball leagues. One would think that the negro leagues made no sense, considering slavery was abolished shortly after the War Between The States.

Why did the negro leagues come to be? Why did such leagues continue to exist, even thrive, for so many decades? Did affirmative action help bring down the color barrier in professional baseball? Reparations?

Here's a bit of history on Negro League Baseball.

Amen.
