Gunman dies, 5 injured at Ohio school
By JOE MILICIA, Associated Press Writer 15 minutes ago
CLEVELAND - A gunman opened fire in a downtown high school Wednesday before killing himself, and five people were taken to a hospital, authorities said. After the shooting, shaken teens called their parents on cell phones, most to reassure but in at least one case with terrifying news: "Mom, I got shot."

Mayor Frank Jackson said three teens and two adults were hurt. He said the children were in "stable, good condition," and the adults were in "a little elevated condition."

Police said SuccessTech Academy had been secured and that the lone suspect had fatally shot himself. Students said he was enrolled at the alternative school but did not attend class Wednesday.

Student Doneisha LeVert, who hid in a closet with two other students after she heard a "Code Blue" alert over the loudspeaker, said the shooter had threatened students Friday.

"He's crazy. He threatened to blow up our school. He threatened to stab everybody," she said.

Ronnell Jackson, 15, said he saw a shooter running down a school hallway.

"He was about to shoot me, but I got out just in time," he said. "He was aiming at me I got out just in time."

Tammy Mundy, 38, who has a son and daughter at the school, told The Plain Dealer that her daughter called when the shooting started.

"She said, 'Mom they're shooting in here, kids are running out, I'm hiding in the closet,'" Mundy told the newspaper.

Then she called her 18-year-old son, Darnell Rodgers, on his cell phone, and he told her he had been shot in the arm.

"He said, 'Mom, I got shot,'" Mundy told the newspaper.

Rodgers' girlfriend, 17-year-old Lateisha Riddlehill, who hid in a bathroom during the shootings, confirmed that Rodgers had been shot in the elbow. She said he told her he was going to be fine.

The mayor said two boys, ages 14 and 17, were hurt, as were two men, ages 42 and 57, and a 14-year-old girl he said fell and hurt her knee while running out of the school. It was not immediately clear if the 17-year-old he referred to might actually be Rodgers.

The 57-year-old is a teacher and was in good condition, said Eileen Korey, a spokeswoman for Metro Health Medical Center. She said the older teenage student was in stable condition, and that conditions on the other patients were not being released.

Students stood outside the building, many in tears, hugging each other and on cell phones. Others shouted at reporters with TV cameras to leave them alone. Family members also stood outside, anxiously waiting for their children to be released.

"I'm scared. I'm hoping no more people got hurt," Ronnell Jackson said.

The shooting occurred across the street from the FBI office in downtown Cleveland, and students were being sent to the FBI site.

"There are a lot of emergency vehicles," said spokesman Scott Wilson. "They're just trying to sort things out right now."

Wilson said he had no information on the shooting.

SuccessTech Academy is an alternative high school in the Cleveland city school district that emphasizes technology and entrepreneurship. It is is housed on several floors of the district's downtown Cleveland Lakeside Avenue administration building.

"It's a shining beacon for the Cleveland Metropolitan School System," said John Zitzner, founder and president of E City Cleveland, a nonprofit group aimed at teaching business skills to inner-city teens. "It's orderly, it's disciplined, it's calm, it's focused."

The school has about 240 mainly black students with a small number of white and Hispanic students. All the students are considered poor under federal poverty guidelines.

The school, opened five years ago, ranks in the middle of the state's ratings for student performance. Its graduation rate is 94 percent, well above the district's rate of 55 percent.

I have been to Cleveland. I can assure you that it is rather conspicuously devoid of shining beacons.

Why is there no thread about that 20 year old cop who killed 6 kids for no apparent reason? I thought that story would meet most demands around here.

Yea FUCK YOU 8 year old acting all innocent. We know your step dad beated you and your mama so you take a loaded gun to school and branish it in the school bus KNOWING asshole step dad will go to jail. And your own mama could have gotten in trouble too but somehow she's in the clear....way to go 8 year old kid! YOU RULE!!

8 year old boy had loaded gun on school bus
Students, driver lauded for their actions
BY DENISE SMITH AMOS | DAMOS@ENQUIRER.COM
E-mail | Print | digg us! | del.icio.us!

COLERAIN TWP. - Students on a Mount Healthy school bus didn't think the holstered gun that a third-grader pulled out of his backpack was real Friday morning.

But they told their bus driver anyway as the 8-year-old boy waved the weapon around and even pointed it at a student.

The gun was real - a .380 Beretta pistol, fully loaded.

The boy wasn't making threats; he wanted to show the gun around, police later said. The gun was not removed from its holster.

Bus driver Bethany Monroe calmly stopped the bus in the 9700 block of Sacramento Street in Colerain Township and walked toward the boy. He tried to hide the gun in his backpack. She took the backpack and gun and called the authorities.

No one was hurt. The gun never went off.

But the students, driver and staff at Duvall Elementary were shaken by an event that could have turned out much worse.

Hamilton County sheriff's officials said later in the day that the boy, whom they wouldn't identify, would not be charged with a crime. Instead, he and his family were referred to the Hamilton County Department of Job & Family Services for further investigation.

Police charged the former boyfriend of the boy's mother with child endangering for leaving the gun where the boy could get it.

Michael Wilson, 26, of Greenhills, was arrested and charged with leaving the gun in the mother's home. A woman who answered the door at his address declined to comment.

Steve Barnett, the Hamilton County sheriff's spokesman, declined to say whether they'd searched the boy's Springfield Township home or questioned relatives.

Eugene Blalock, principal at Duvall Elementary, said he was proud of the 10 students and the bus driver, who is a substitute. Monroe declined to comment.

Blalock said he thought that the students were so calm because they thought the gun was not real.

"It's a good thing the kids knew what to do,'' he said. "They told the bus driver immediately. We really praise the kids on the bus. They did exactly what they needed to do."

People who saw the bus stop unexpectedly in their neighborhood at 8:40 a.m. said several police cars - two of them unmarked - converged on the bus. Neighbors reported seeing the boy crying while being led off the bus into a squad car.

Jenn Ayers, who lives on Sacramento Street, where the bus stopped, said her children had been playing outside with their puppy minutes before deputies swarmed the neighborhood and arrested the boy.

"It's very scary," Ayers said. "They just had their dog out in the front yard, 10 feet away."

Miguel Foster Sr., a neighbor of the 8-year-old, said his children play with the boy.

"He doesn't seem like the type of kid who would endanger anybody," he said. Foster said he thinks the boy didn't really know he had a real, loaded gun.

"Even though it was an innocent mistake, it could have been a mistake gone wrong," he said.

Gunman opens fire in Tennessee church, 2 killed
By DUNCAN MANSFIELD, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 25 minutes ago
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - A gunman opened fire at a church youth performance Sunday and killed two people, including a man who witnesses called a hero for shielding others from a shotgun blast.

Seven adults were also injured but no children were harmed at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. Church members said they dove under pews or ran from the building when the shooting started.

The gunman was tackled by congregants and eventually taken into police custody.

Jim D. Adkisson, 58, was charged with first-degree murder and was being held on $1 million bail, according to city spokesman Randy Kenner, who did not know if the suspect had retained an attorney. Authorities were searching Adkisson's home in the Knoxville bedroom community of Powell, Kenner said.

The man slain was identified as Greg McKendry, 60, a longtime church member and usher. Church member Barbara Kemper told The Associated Press that McKendry "stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us."

Linda Kreager, 61, died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center a few hours after the shooting, Knoxville city spokesman Randall Kenner said.

Five people remained hospitalized, all in critical or serious condition. Two others were treated and released.

The gunman's motive is not yet known. The church, like many other Unitarian Universalist churches, promotes progressive social work, such as desegregation and fighting for the rights of women and gays. The Knoxville congregation has provided sanctuary for political refugees, fed the homeless and founded a chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, according to its Web site.

Kemper said the gunman shouted before he opened fire.

"It was hateful words. He was saying hateful things," she said, but refused to elaborate.

The FBI was assisting in the case in case it turns out be a hate crime, Police Chief Sterling Owen said. Police were taking statements from witnesses and collecting video cameras from church members who taped the performance.

There were about 200 people watching a performance by 25 children based on the musical "Annie" when the shooting took place.

Church member Mark Harmon said he was in the first row. "It had barely begun when there was an incredibly loud bang," he said.

Harmon said he thought the noise was part of the play, then he heard a second loud bang. As he dove for cover, he realized a woman behind him was bleeding. She looked like she was in shock, touching her wound, he said.

"It seems so unreal," Harmon said. "You're sitting in church, you're watching a children's performance of a play and suddenly you hear a bang."

Harmon said church members just behind him in the second and third rows were shot. His wife told him that she saw the gunman pull the shotgun out of a guitar case.

Witnesses reported hearing about three blasts from the .12-gauge shotgun, which spreads pellets out when the shot leaves the barrel. Witnesses said they did not recognize the gunman.

Church members said the gunman was tackled by John Bohstedt, who played "Daddy Warbucks" in the performance. He declined comment when reached by phone at his home.

Friends of McKendry said he was friendly with everyone.

"Greg McKendry was a very large gentlemen, one of those people you might describe as a refrigerator with a head," said member Schera Chadwick, whose husband, Ted Lollis, arrived at the church just after the shooting. "He looked like a football player. He did obviously stand up and put himself in between the shooter and the congregation."

McKendry and his wife had recently taken in a foster child.

The church's minister was on vacation in western North Carolina at the time of the shooting but returned Sunday afternoon.

"We've been touched by a horrible act of violence. We are in a process of healing and we ask everyone for your prayers," the Rev. Chris Buice said in a statement outside the church. "I will tell you we love Greg McKendry. We are grieving the loss of a wonderful man."

With all due respect to Mr. McKendry, he was an usher. When people come in, ushers stand up to greet them. This guy had a shotgun instead of Bible and meant to use it and the usher got shot first. Retrospective heroism is ushered in next.

http://kdvr.com/2012/02/27/one-stud...-4-others-hurt/

quote:
(CNN) — Sorrow and disbelief replaced the chaos of Monday morning’s school shooting in Chardon, Ohio, as residents and investigators tried to sort out what prompted a young man to open fire on a table of students in the school cafeteria, killing one and wounding four others.

“I just can’t believe it. I don’t think it’s real,” said student Danny Komertz, who witnessed the shooting. “And I just, it kills me that I saw someone hiding, and now that someone is now dead.”

The gunman, whom police said is a juvenile, opened fire in the cafeteria of Chardon High School just as the school day was getting started about 7:30 a.m., according to police. Witnesses said he walked up to a table of four students he may have known and began shooting.

Police said they arrested the suspected gunman a short time later in Chardon Township, a community of about 5,000 people located 30 miles east of Cleveland.

Police Chief Tim McKenna declined to identify the suspect, while school Superintendent Joseph Bergant said only that he was a student. But student Nate Mueller, who was slightly wounded in the shooting, told the Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland that the suspect was student T.J. Lane.

On December 30, Lane posted a long, poetic rant on his Facebook page centered “in a quaint lonely town, (where there) sits a man with a frown (who) longed for only one thing, the world to bow at his feet.”

“He was better than the rest, all those ones he detests, within their castles, so vain,” he wrote.

Lane then writes about going through “the castle … like an ominous breeze through the trees,” past guards — all leading up to the post’s dramatic conclusion.

“Feel death, not just mocking you. Not just stalking you but inside of you,” he writes. “Wriggle and writhe. Feel smaller beneath my might. Seizure in the Pestilence that is my scythe. Die, all of you.”

The student purportedly killed in Monday’s shooting was identified by his family as Daniel Parmertor.

“We are shocked by this senseless tragedy,” Parmertor’s family said in a statement released by MetroHealth Medical Center. “Danny was a bright young boy who had a bright future ahead of him. The family is torn by this loss.”

Parmertor and two other wounded students were taken by helicopter to MetroHealth, hospital representative Shannon Mortland said in a statement. McKenna said at 4 p.m. that the other two were in critical condition.

Another two students injured in the shooting, one male and one female, were taken to Hillcrest Hospital, spokeswoman Heather Phillips said. One was in serious condition, and the other was in stable condition, according to McKenna.

A student at Chardon High, Evan Erasmus, said the victims were Chardon students who attended a vocational school in Auburn, Ohio, and were waiting for a bus to take them there.

Police recovered a handgun and gave it to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for examination, that agency said.

A law enforcement source said the Geauga County sheriff’s office and federal agents were executing search warrants in the case, but the official did not provide locations.

The Plain Dealer reported that Mueller said he was sitting with others at a table in the cafeteria when Lane approached them.

“My friends were crawling on the floor, and one of my friends was bent over the table, and he was shot,” the newspaper quoted Mueller as saying. “It was almost like a firecracker went off. I turned around and saw (Lane) standing with a gun, and I saw him take a shot.”

Mueller said he ran from the building, hid and called police, according to the newspaper.

Erasmus said he had just arrived for his English class when the shooting happened.

“All of a sudden, one of the administrators got on the announcements and yelled, ‘Lockdown!’ ” Erasmus said. “All of a sudden, all the doors started slamming. You could hear them slam. And we all turned off the lights, and we headed towards the corner.”

Komertz said he heard a pop as he was walking with friends. He looked up to see a boy he did not recognize holding a gun, pointing it at a group of four students.

“He just fired two quick shots at them,” Komertz said. “I saw one student fall, and I saw the other hiding, trying to get cover underneath the table.”

Komertz said he started to run when he saw the gun but heard a total of five shots.

A student who identified herself as Victoria told CNN affiliate WJW that she heard a boom and turned to look into the cafeteria to see the student holding a silver handgun, standing 10 to 15 feet from a table of students.

“He started walking closer and closer. It was just like, ‘Boom, boom, boom, boom,’” she said.

Multiple calls reporting a shooting at the school flooded into the police dispatch center beginning at 7:38 a.m., McKenna said.

After police got word from a dispatcher that a teacher had chased the suspect out of the school, officers went inside, soon followed by paramedics to help the injured students, McKenna said.

It was unclear exactly how the suspect was captured. Initial reports from police indicated that the suspect may have turned himself in to bystanders, but McKenna did not mention that during the brief midday news conference. Instead, he said officers “came up with the suspect” after starting a search shortly after the shooting.

“I want to assure the community of Chardon that we are safe,” McKenna said.

Later Monday morning, investigators took over the school and were collecting evidence after students had been evacuated to nearby Maple Elementary School, said Lt. John Hiscox of the sheriff’s office.

School administrators later called off school for the day, bringing in grief counselors Monday afternoon and scheduling a candlelight service at a nearby church Tuesday.

“We certainly hope those families know they’re in our thoughts and prayers,” said Bergant, the school superintendent.

Parents eager to retrieve their children hurried to school buildings shortly after the shooting, forming long lines as school officials and police checked identification before releasing students. SWAT team members stood guard outside the school, allowing only a few parents inside at a time, enhancing what was a surreal scene for many.

“This stuff doesn’t happen here at Chardon. Everybody’s a little upset,” said one parent who was preparing to pick up his daughter, a 10th-grader who had been evacuated to Maple Elementary School.

Parents and children frequently embraced and cried when reunited.

Teresa Hunt said she exchanged about 50 texts with her 18-year-old daughter, a senior at the high school. They began about 7:45 a.m., minutes after the shooting was reported. Hunt said her daughter hunkered down with her class inside their classroom, staying clear of the door. She said they could hear police officers running down the hall.

“They’re terrified. She was crying. Her anxiety was way up,” Hunt said.

“I did ask her, about the third or fourth text in, if she had any indication that something was going to break out,” Hunt said. “She said, ‘No, this was sudden. I had heard nothing.’ Her friends had heard nothing also.”

Erasmus said he believed that frequent lockdown drills and the quick response of school authorities helped keep the situation from becoming worse.

Bergant said that there will be no school Tuesday in the district, though counselors will be available then and once classes resume.

“I hope that every parent, if you haven’t hugged or kissed your family in the last couple of days, take that time,” the superintendent said.

There is a long history of deadly violence on school campuses, ranging from incidents in which students stab each other or shoot staff members to mass murders like the ones at Virginia Tech and Columbine High School.

In April 1999, two teenagers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed 12 students and a teacher before they killed themselves in the library at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

Gunman Seung-Hui Cho unleashed one of the deadliest campus attacks in American history at Virginia Tech in April 2007, killing 32 students and staff members. Two handguns were found near his body after the 23-year-old senior finally ended his rampage by killing himself.

Not all school killings are carried out by students. A 32-year-old man, Charles Roberts IV, took 11 girls hostage at a small Amish school in Pennsylvania in October 2006 and killed five of them. The other six were wounded before Roberts killed himself.

In a time long since, a time of repent, The Renaissance. In a quaint lonely town, sits a man with a frown. No job. No family. No crown. His luck had run out. Lost and alone.

The streets were his home. His thoughts would solely consist of "why do we exist?" His only company to confide in was the vermin in the street. He longed for only one thing, the world to bow at his feet.

They too should feel his secret fear. The dismal drear. His pain had made him sincere. He was better than the rest, all those ones he detests, within their castles, so vain. Selfish and conceited.

They couldn't care less about the peasents they mistreated. They were in their own world, it was a joyous one too. That castle, she stood just to do all she could to keep the peasents at bay, not the enemy away.

They had no enemies in their filthy orgy. And in her, the castles every story, was just another chamber of Lucifer's Laboratory. The world is a sandbox for all the wretched sinners.

They simply create what they want and make themselves the winners. But the true winner, he has nothing at all. Enduring the pain of waiting for that castle to fall. Through his good deeds, the rats and the fleas.

He will have for what he pleads, through the eradication of disease. So, to the castle he proceeds, like an ominous breeze through the trees. "Stay back!" The Guards screamed as they were thrown to their knees. "Oh God, have mercy, please!"

The castle, she gasped and then so imprisoned her breath, to the shallow confines of her fragile chest. I'm on the lamb but I ain't no sheep. I am Death. And you have always been the sod. So repulsive and so odd.

You never even deserved the presence of God, and yet, I am here. Around your cradle I plod. Came on foot, without shod. How improper, how rude. However, they shall not mind the mud on my feet if there is blood on your sheet.

Now! Feel death, not just mocking you. Not just stalking you but inside of you. Wriggle and writhe. Feel smaller beneath my might. Seizure in the Pestilence that is my scythe. Die, all of you.

Dude. I bought that same teddy at the Wal Marts. What does this mean?

It wasn't quite that simple. The gunman entered the church with others, and proceeded to the front of the sanctuary carrying a guitar case, as if he were there to provide musical accompaniment to the play. He was to one side of the podium area when he removed the shotgun from the case, turned and fired into the congregation. McKendry was several feet away at the center aisle, and immediately moved to block further shots, while another parishioner who was directing the play tackled the gunman. The second round killed McKendry, and a third round was discharged into the ceiling during the struggle.

Yeah, McKendry was a hero that day.
