Uncool Songs

The title of this thread may be a tad bit misleading. I'm going to imbed some songs I most certainly do like. Many of them will be country, old-school and otherwise. Some of you may think country music ain't cool. So be it; I couldn't care less.

For example, I've always liked Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. Here's one of the prettiest love songs I've ever heard, with beautiful, simple lyrics:

Unfortunately, the first few seconds of the above clip are missing. Buck passed away in 2006. His sidekick, Don Rich, an amazing talent, was killed in a motorcylce accident in 1974. The full song, albeit live in 1990, is here. Although it's good, the absence of Don Rich is noticeable.

Amen.

I saw Dwight live a few years ago. Helluva concert, helluva show. He's got some chicken-pickin' fools playin' with 'im. Here's one of many I like:

Ricky Scaggs ~ You've Got A Lover

Yes, Ricky Scaggs is a great talent. The embedding was disabled, so here's a link.

The clubs are all closed and theres no where to go when the sun wont show for hours
The streets have all emptied and lovers lay sleeping and dreaming of each other

Chorus
Youve got a lover but its not me.
He cant love you like I can
There will be others yes I understand
Will they love me like you can

Theres Acres and Acres of heartbroken lovers I know where not the first ones
But sometimes it seems that its just like a dream that you try hard to remember

Chorus
Youve got a lover but its not me.
He cant love you like I can
There will be others yes I understand
Will they love me like you can

Lead

The clubs are all closing you know I was hoping that time would hold me over
I pull up my collar walk into the night Ill be looking for an answer

Chorus
Youve got a lover but its not me.
He cant love you like I can
There will be others yes I understand
Will they love me like you can

Amen.

Check out "Countrysides" by Cracker, and also Mike Ness's solo efforts for that matter.

Countrysides has the immortal lyric "hey babe, it ain't gonna suck itself", and also a great little diddy about two amphetamine cooking Mexicans, penned originaly by Bruce Springsteen of all people.

Hah, Jeb, at that live performance by Dwight Yoakum, I bet you could have cut the odor of wet panties with a knife.

I grew up with country music in the house constantly. Before we moved away, my folks were on the periphery of the late '50's Bakersfield music set, as my uncle played guitar briefly with Buck Owens. The Vilard ranch, north of Bakersfield, was the usual site of the San Joaquin Valley Cattleman's Association gatherings; my Dad was the Superintendent. Several performers had ranchs in the area; Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Slim Pickens, and others. Slim and Roy & Dale were usual attendants.

That classic country sound was a lot of fun. My Mom was a lover of the balladeers, guys like Johnny Horton. I was fascinated by Elton Britt as a youngster, his Chime Bells was one of Mom's favorires.

Gram Parsons

Meet Gram Parsons. Rokkr and company know all about him, but for you young pups, Parsons was (and remains) one of the most influential musician you've probably never heard of. Here's my favorite song of his, sung during a short stint with the re-formed Byrds: Hickory Wind.

Here is an uncharacteristically poignant and interesting read from wikipedia.

Here's his homepage.

To the Fallen Angel:

Amen.

Dixie Chicks ~ You Were Mine

Say what you will about the Dixie Chicks, but they've put out a lot of great music over the years. This sad song is especially well-written and arranged:

You Were Mine.

Same song, but live in London:

Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys ~ Take Me Back To Tulsa

I can't say enough about the legendary Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. Here's a very old, highly entertaining, clip of one of their most well-known songs (and there were many):

Days of Wine and Roses

IMHO, this song is in a class by itself. The music was written by Henry Mancini and the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It's been covered plenty, but I like Andy Williams' cover the best:

Regarding the movie, from none other than wikipedia.

This is another wistful, beautiful classic. Very simple, it's been covered all over the place. Patti Page had a big hit with it in 1950:
