Ray Wylie Hubbard ~ Screw You, We're From Texas

Ray is best know for "Redneck Mother", which Jerry Jeff made into a big hit, but here's something else by Ray:

Here's a wee bit about Ray from wikipedia.

Man, I'd like to hear that, but I haven't been able to find it. I note the track on Countrysides is listed as "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mothers." I saw Jerry Jeff many years ago at Billy Bob's. Here's Jerry Jeff's take on Redneck Mother. It was a real crowd-pleaser:

Willie Nelson ~ Time of the Preacher

I was a bodyguard for Willie at a concert back in the 70's held outdoors in a rodeo arena. Prior to that time, I wasn't a fan. Willie played over four hours, didn't bullshit aimlessly between songs, and took only one short break to sign autographs while the band kept playing. I'd never seen an artist so generous with his crowd. Needless to say, he earned my respect that night and I became a fan.

Willie is truly a living legend. This song is pure Willie:

Hank WIlliams ~ I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

From one of the greatest country artists ever:

Hear the lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Amen.

Linda Ronstadt ~ Long Long Time

I've included this song in this thread simply because, IMHO, it is such an incredibly beautiful song of unrequited love:

Long Long Time.

I have also been curious about Gary B. White, who wrote the song. I wasn't able to find a great deal about him. Perhaps Rokkr could help me out on this one? Anyway, here's a few sentences from a 1970 Circus magazine article:

". . . Most prominently represented is Gary White, a Texas boy whose main axe is bass though he plays a little of everything. Gary used to be in a group called the Lost Sea Dreamers who changed their names to Circus Maximus and did two albums for Vanguard. Jerry Jeff Walker came out of that group and it was when Jerry split to go solo that the group broke up. Anyway, Gary has been hanging out in New York for the last few years, just playing and writing. He played some live gigs behind Patrick Sky and was the bass player on Paul Seibel's album. Gary's a real good bass player but he's a terrific songwriter and Linda has included three of his songs on Silk Purse. They are, '"Long Long Time," "I've Said Love So Many Times," and "Nobodys." The latter is a tune about a girl who has become withdrawn and can't handle it anymore. You have to hear the whole song. It just could become a classic. . . ." From here.

Here are the lyrics:

Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice but there's no one at my side
And time washes clean love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me but I don't know what it means.

Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time

Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me for a long long time

Wait for the day
You'll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I'd have to pay
And life's full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I've done everything I know to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time.

Amen.

Don Williams ~ Amanda

I think the key to Don's success has been his simplicity. This is a classic country waltz from one of the great country artists. Warning: The video accompanying this track is painfully stupid, to be blunt, but I went ahead and imbedded it because the audio is good:

Napoleon XIV ~ They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha-Haaa!

This novelty recording by Jerry Samuels actually reached #5 in 1966 and the youtube clip includes the reverse side:

This line from wikipedia cracked me up: "Samuels still writes songs and presently runs a business that books entertainment, primarily for retirement homes."

Trick Pony ~ Pour Me

I've always really liked this song. It has serious giddyup and is a great example of how blurred (sometimes almost non-existent) the line between country and rock has become. No question the vocals are fairly country, but that's about it:
