The Silkie ~ You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

This Beatles cover actually reached #10 in the U.S. in 1966:

Silkie Wiki

Amen.

The Gentrys ~ Cinnamon Girl (1970)

I always enjoyed this cover of perhaps my favorite Neil Young song (I really like Sea of Madness, too, and numerous others):

The Gentrys.

Amen.

Fortunately, vocal chords in the sinuses were an evolutionary dead end.

I hear tell it's a Limey thang.

John thought he'd just produced a #1 hit, though.

Amen.

Sinuvocal chords are the bread and butter of Appalachian music.

The Isles are where most of 'em came from, excepting perhaps only the Melungeons.

If you ever get a chance, you have to watch Across the Universe.
Some of the best beatles covers I've ever heard, and I've heard a few.

I did and those covers were as you say. It was one of those movies that you'd enjoy just about much watching it with your eyes closed.

Kula Shaker ~ Hush

Lotsa folks mistakenly attribute this song to Deep Purple. It was written by Joe South. THough it doesn't break into any new territory, this cover by Kula Shaker is rather good, I think:

About Joe South, from wikipedia.

Amen.

Mama's Boys ~ Mama Weer All Crazee Now

I always thought this was a righteous cover of an oft-covered classic Slade tune:

Mama's Boys, per here.

Amen.

Prelude ~ After the Goldrush (1974)

I always liked this cover of a classic Neil Young tune:

Prelude, according to Wikipedia.

Amen.

So far JEB wins.

I'm a total whore for covers, so I'm glad I caught this thread.

Maybe not enough country/bluegrass fans to really appreciate this one, but one of my favorites of the last few years came from Dolly Parton.

Though there may be singers I like more, I'm fairly convinced, if I ever get a chance to hear him direct, that the voice of God will sound like either Leonard Cohen, Ralph Stanley, or Dolly Parton. I suspect Ralph Stanley, I fear Leonard Cohen, I hope Dolly Parton.

Anyway, it's one of those covers where it seems like the original had no business being covered in the first place, but if it was to be covered, this would be the last person you'd think of to do it. Somehow though it not only works, but it sounds like Dolly's is the original.
