instead of looking for a career that you love that insidiously monopolizes more and more of your private time, why not find a well paying job that is simply satisfying that you dont have to invest more than 8 hours per day so you can afford to do the things you love that arent work related? thats what i opted for.

I'm in the middle of a career reboot right now, actually.

I was a beautician for 7 years, then a dental assistant, currently a pediatric CNA and when I started in healthcare I started the long nursing school process. After seeing some really fucked up shit happen to the kids I've decided after 4 years that nursing is not for me. So, halfway through my LPN training I dropped out and started going to school for Social Work.

Someone once told me to choose a path that you really enjoy doing. I considered that. I've always had a bleeding heart, per se...I've always been the one there when someone needs me the most. Social Work was it for me. Its the best decision I could have ever made, choosing this career path.

So I guess my advice is do what you love, think what kind of person you are truly and apply that to a career.

Here's my honest opinion: Like many folks, you've become adept at thinking and talking yourself into inertia.

I say that with respect, ol' pal. The best way I know to get moving forward again is to first acknowledge it.

Amen.

So you enjoy what you're doing, now try imagining that other folks might enjoy doing their jobs as well.

After high school I got married and went to work on the family ranch in Montana. Made $500/month, free housing, free beef and gas for the car. Lived way out in the boonies with no tv reception and only got radio during the day. We drove to town once a month for groceries, then after the kids came went to the big city once or twice a year to sell winter furs and to buy school supplies.

After a family blow-up (partially chronicled here ) I packed all our shit up and moved to a faraway town with a hospital and a college (my wife was/is a registered nurse). There I decided to learn something "mediciny," figuring that way she and I would always be able to find jobs in the same place.

Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging didn't look too hard, re: the syllabus, plus I found it interesting since I had broken my arms and legs 19 times as a kid. Turns out it wasn't that easy, but compared to ranching it was a breeze. I walked out of there with the Academic Achievement Award for my class, a few years later.

While schooling I took a job with the local newspaper writing their outdoor column and doing outdoor-related reporting. Also sold articles and stories freelance. Enjoyed that, but decided writing provided too unstable a paycheck to pursue with a family to support. Besides, I lacked a formal education in the basics of grammar, sentence structure, etc. and felt acutely conscious of the fact all the time.

Spent 17 years in a small Idaho hospital/clinic plying that trade until I fell ill a year ago. Had a lot of fun with it while I was there, though. Did some real good for a few folks, which surprisingly, I found was more important to me than I expected.

Go for it, man.

I actually don't earn my living that way (haven't for some years), not primarily, and yet I do it still and often for little to no compensation other than I enjoy employing one of the skillsets that I have, and I enjoy creating a well done product. In fact I'm in the midst of some remodeling in the bathroom here, and I'm looking forward to painting it tomorrow. My biggest complaint would be that the woman is not interested in my more expansive ideas for painting it, ideas for trompe l'oeil murals have been shot down, as well as filigrees. But it's a nice blue nonetheless that will complement the tile excellently.

Like I already said, imagine for one fucking second that some people might like their jobs as well you pinheaded little shit.

Early in my marriage I was almost an OTR (over the road) trucker but declined because of the lack of quality time at home.
Kids grow fast. Too fast.

i don't remember saying that i'm the only person who loves their job, so i'm not entirely sure where you got that from, but you'd have to be out of your mind to believe that even a quarter of the workers in this country wake up excited about their jobs, because its essentially their hobby, right? if you're one of those few, then cool, you're lucky. cheer up.

No, do you need a full layout of why you're being called out for being a twat? Fine, pay attention shitbag.

We start with you:

ITT: people trying to convince you that their decline to mindless physical labor was intentional and desirable

You sneer at 'mindless physical labor, implying that no one would possibly do it willingly.

Then simon chimes in:
Advertising: the drones keep trying to convince themselves what they do is ART, has meaning and worth.

Typical simon, basically throwing your sneer back in your face.

Then proceeds an exchange with simon and myself in which you first try to deny you're in advertising by calling it something else in some retarded bit of newspeak, backed into a corner on that you finally stamp your feet and declare that it doesn't matter because you like what you do.

Then I suggest that you might consider the idea that might apply to other people, to which you respond inreduluously with a post that shows you failed to consider the idea, or find it near impossible. I then spell it out for you even more fucking plainly. Then you post a 'hey all I was saying that was my job was cool and some people don't like their job'. Nice fucking backpedaling. You were being a superior cunt about jobs that aren't 'intellectual' like designing corporate logos and implied that anyone who enjoyed them was lying.

Stop pretending you weren't being a cunt, and that you weren't drastically wrong.
