Just finished Red State. It's a pretty good flick that keeps you interested what's coming next. It suffered a bit by being stiff-legged when it came to the gun play and such. The entire last 8 1/2 minutes could have been completely whacked off the end of it however and it would have been a very different, and I think, much better movie. A good fan edit is in order at some point.
It's like a committee got together and decided to smash Cloverfield into the Goonies. There where some pretty good scenes but overall it's a giant steaming turd of a movie. It's the kind of flick you'll only watch once.
It was hard to really understand the point of movie. He goes around trying to sell ad space on not a "movie" but on a long commercial. There really isn't much substance to the whole thing in the end except that he was able to raise the millions to make it. What he was really selling was himself as a known documenting entity, never once painting the whole ordeal in any bad light or for that matter really telling us anything we don't already know. Unlike "Super Size Me" this movie will have no effect on the market in general and is self serving. I have to guess he thought it would be harder then walking into POM and getting a couple million, a real film can't budget this way not one with real ideas made by people trying to get a start. still he is very charismatic and I'd likly watch him do most anything.
they make a big deal about how if they kill an alien then the earth is fucked. so then they kill a whole shitload of aliens and the ufo warps off all exit stage left like "oh shit two humans fought back. time to skedaddle!" the final shots of the movie really should have been an alien war fleet warping in over the town or something else that would at least reinforce the point the main character had been making the entire movie. i mean, at one point he's even asked what would happen if they killed the alien and he says that humanity would be slaughtered like an animal that killed a human. instead the last scene is he and his girlfriend driving off and she asks "are we going to be alright?" and he just says "we'll see." camera pulls out to show a wide shot of the sky behind the van. that's it.
