Thumbs up Miss Sloane (2016)

I saw Miss Sloane Saturday evening. I almost didn't go. I generally don't enjoy movies about politics. Miss Sloane, however, was a very pleasant surprise. It strongly suggests D.C. is a sewer that needs draining, rather than a swamp. Here's a link.

Amen.

The TV show "Rectify" had it's final episode last Wednesday. Over 4 seasons, I watched every episode and loved it. The finale had such sensitivity and emotional depth to it. Ray McKinnon, the writer, is a genius because every episode was a real gem, not just the finale. I can't wait to see what he does next. (Noah Hawley is another great writer. He was the writer for both seasons of "Fargo," which was astoundingly good... in fact, as good as the movie, which itself was great.)

This is the kind of man whose next idea is to force his wife to wear a pillow case over her head and face when she's out in public. That's the next step. But people will be okay with it because they'll say "But she WANTS to dress that way."

Passengers (2016)

I saw this last night. Although it's available in 3D, I skipped the "technology".

Not a bad flick. Interesting. It's like a big, interstellar cruise ship. Here's a link.

Assassin's Creed (2016)

I saw this video game movie this past weekend. In 3D. Not bad, despite its poor ratings. Lots 'n' lotsa action. Frankly, the casting was irrelevant. Here's a link.

The Hobbit movies are on TV. The first time I was entranced enough by the visuals to ignore how insanely bad they are.

Such awkward and terrible and pointless and stupid and terrible movies.

"O Brother, Where Art Thou?" was the latest movie I watched.

I'm a fan of the Coen Brothers. This one, however, didn't do much for me. I could see the 3 main actors acting throughout. I never suspended my disbelief. I know it's based on The Odyssey, but the material at hand didn't rock my boat.

I've been a Coen Bros. fan for many years. Blood Simple, however, remains my favorite. I liked Oh Brother quite a bit, but I readily acknowledge that is due in large part to the superb soundtrack. Without it, I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much.

Amen.

I need to watch Blood Simple again (perhaps). I hardly remember it. My favorite Coen Brothers movie is, of course, Fargo. Hard to top that one. Although, to be honest, the two seasons of Fargo on TV were equally as great, IMHO. Billy Bob Thornton in the first season was just terrific. My second favorite Coen Brothers movie is "Raising Arizona." Another terrific movie that never lets you down. "A Serious Man" is my third favorite. I like so many of their others, too. But those are my top 3. Joel and Ethan are pretty much geniuses, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree. FYI, that incredibly simple and hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to "Blood Simple" by Carter Burwell put him on the map:

Love it! Burwell has done a number of Coen Brothers films, including "A Serious Man," which I mention above.

Make sure you don't think that the opening scenes will continue. Those scenes are just the prelude. It then switches into the real story in modern times.

Thumbs up Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

I watched this last night. Why? Because I'd already seen everything else available that I cared to see.

Generally speaking, war movies don't float my boat. But, surprise, surprise. Say what they will about Mel Gibson, HSR is a very, very good movie, especially for a deplorable like me. Gibson tells a glorious tale of truly remarkable heroism without glorifying war in the least.[spoiler]
Here's a link.

I feel ya, bro. War movies aren't my thing, but Mel Gibson is a great director. I hope they release a kid-friendly version.
