Thanks Coin
Tefl: They do have a lot of fishing piers in this lake and the other lake a few blocks over, so I imagine there must be something good in there.
If nothing else, you could eat the ducks and geese.

Ya'll should go and drop a line in it and find out. Take the kiddos, they'll have a blast and it would be a good lesson for them. Get some pics of Brett turning green as he guts a trout.

OR you could get an aquarium and teach your kids other approaches to wildlife than immediately killing them.

we don't eat seafood at all(not fans of it).

My son has fished and crabbed with my grandmother(who kept the catches for herself, since we don't eat it) in Virginia, though.
I used to do the same with her when I was a kid. Pretty sure Brett's done it before, too.

Unless we have a need for it(starving) or it's going to someone else who WILL eat it, it's just not something we're into.

also, thanks TT

Killing wildlife is perfectly reasonable, provided it's done without needless cruelty, and you genuinely intend to use as much of the animal as possible. It's also a valuable skill set in the event of serious badness happening, by which I do not necessarily mean some sort of apocalyptic occurrence. A light plane crash in central nowhere, or a piece of bad navigation during a hiking trip, or several other possible scenarios could all lead to needing to know these things.

While you're at it, teach your kids to find their latitude using nothing more than the sun, knowledge of the current date, and some fairly simple math they can do in their head. Teach them also to find their longitude using the sun and an analog watch. These things may help prevent the bad navigation while hiking.

Yeah. One should always be ready for catastrophe. Adrenaline levels should always be high. That didn't exactly pertain to my quote, though.
But since you bring it up. A kid who learns how things live will acquire more lasting personal and professional benefits than the kid who learns how to kill things. It's pure logic ....and the killing will necessarily follow.

The last time I went fishing was years ago. And yes, it was for food, not fun.
