5'11, 237 and dropping. Lost 40 pounds, and grew quite a bit of muscle already.

Feels good to see the results of hard work.

Unfortunately,if it's your Thyroid,I don't think it'll matter how many calories a day you have. Is there a way you can get that checked out Tefl?

I used to know a super-skinny guy with thyroid problems who went around eating sticks of butter and bricks of cheese. I wonder if he lived past 40 or died of a heart attack.

Mordecai is right with beans + rice.

Beans also provide some proteins.

Additionally I'd suggest Cottage Cheese, I don't know about the prices in the US, but it's cheap here and filled with Prots.

It's also good for you to aim for complex carbs, whole grain products etc. (if your purse allows you that luxury)

No, it won't help you pack on weight, but if you buy large (and I do mean large) quantities it's cheap and should provide enough calories to keep you from losing more.

Beans, rice, and the like have been a large part my diet of late. And yes, the quantity is a large part the problem here. Meat is at most a three times a week occurrence and then only if your willing to accept things like generic spam, bologna, or bottom-rung ground beef. But share that among five people once a day and it's nothing. (And that number goes to seven twice a week when the kids come over.) I honestly never get to be full unless it's bullshit like ramen noodles, or useless fucking vegetables, and it's been that way for a long, long time now.

AYE, prices here in the States are going full retard. The spike we have seen the last year or so is just unbelievable and is just going to get higher as our economy is pissed away. The decent foods are just out of reach for alot of folks now. You can't even consider that mode of thought unless your willing to spend three days of cost for one days worth of eating.

Not a chance. The last time I went to any sort of doctor was the local health department over a year ago and they told me in so many words to get the hell out because I didn't have the cash. I wrote about that experience in a thread back then and to be honest my circumstances haven't improved much at all.

The reason I think (hope) it may be more than my diet exactly is the fact that things have always been tight. I'm used to that in alot of ways. It's just the way the world works and I grew up seeing it everyday since I was little. Some get to have because the others don't.
But this recent loss is worrisome. In a way, there is a part of me that would like to think (hope) something is wrong physically instead of facing the fact that most likely I'm simply starving to death so everyone else around me can eat. This is a prime example of what happens in this world to a "nice guy."

If any of you ever wonder where the source of my "bleak" outlook of things spring, now you know. I get to see life in it's true reality all too often. And it's ugly. Goddamned hideously ugly and the beauty is fleeting, all too rare, and usually too expensive to do more than dream about. And it will never change. I have to be in survival mode way the fuck too often and it's scarred the hell out of me.

Sorry ya'll, I'm pissed off, hungry, and just absolutely disgusted with the world right now. In fact, I've said too much as it is.

To eat as healthfully as possible and accounting for gardened stuff I have worked out that it's $x5, hereabouts - there's a highly affordable between-zone if you can stomach a range of prepackaged only-slightly-toxic quasifoodstuffs, vs mold-free naturally farmed produce running all the way up to $x10. Meanwhile, GMO organic chemistry is bottled or jarred and labelled 'Organic!' for the peasant class.

let us form gangs and eat one another

I don't know if this is much help, my friend, but I'll share: Many years ago, I found myself up against it. I couldn't see any light at the end of the tunnel for at least a few weeks. So, I bought a couple big cheap jars o' peanut butter, a couple large boxes o' saltine crackers and a very large jar o' pickled okra. Yeah, I wasn't thinking about nutrition; rather, my aim was to make sure I had something to keep the hunger hounds at bay whenever they started growlin'. It got me through the lean stretches.

Amen.

Oh believe me, I do have some things put back when it comes to vegetables. But a person can and will starve to death on vegetables alone, I don't care what the vegetarians say otherwise. I'm so sick of vegetables I can't express it fully. They do help in limping through the leaner times but there has to be an end to those times eventually. I mean seriously, when a can of potted meat looks like a feast... there is something wrong.

While unemployed in 2009, I was feeding myself and two daughters 3 squares a day on less than $150 a month. It wasn't pretty, and it wasn't fancy, but we were all healthy.

Mainly, I fixed a LOT of pintos, cabbage, rice, corn bread, and the ocassional green bean or whole kernel corn.

In order to make sure the girls had plenty of food, I learned to eat a single serving off a dessert plate. And the only drink we had was tap water (eeewwwwww Texas summer tap water).

I dropped almost 60 pounds, and amazingly never felt better.

But if I'd had $10 less dollars a month for groceries, it would have become a complete shambles.

Good luck, TEFL. I hope you die peacefully.

A check up?

He has no money, and where he lives he's the wrong fucking color to get any help from the "free" medical services - which are pitifully bad and mostly unavailable. The nearest city of any size is about 4 days walk away, and he'd still be the wrong color to get any help there.

Yep. And looking back, we didn't know how poor we were because everybody else around us was pretty much in the same shape.

Amen.

Tefl you could be having a vitamin deficiency. Vitamin E helped someone I know that was losing weight fairly quick.
And that's after a slew of blood tests that showed nothing including his thyroid.

This place is a fuckhole to try find work in. Walmart hopefully, or temp agencies are the only ones that won't hire on the "Oh I know your folks" system.

Can't work in fast food, or a gas station or a store unless you're in the good ol' boy system.

Welp! Here's to getting a CNA.

That right there is why cities are so popular in spite of their obvious drawbacks. In a city, nobody gives a shit who you are, and this perversely makes it easier to find work.

TEFL, are there any taxidermists nearby? Check and see if they have any unclaimed vinison or other game in their freezers. Lots of times they'll give it away just to free up freezer space.

That's an interesting idea but I'm going on a hunch in saying probably not. As rural as this area is I just don't see the rednecks leaving such unclaimed. It adds to their bragging rights and cock size to have a freezer full. Also, despite the fact that wild game is not supposed to be sold there is a thriving market for such. It's really too valuable for anyone to give it away. Even the local christian food banks have to genuinely beg for game to be donated. Every year they thump the newspapers for such like it was gold and they certainly will shame the hell out of you about receiving it.

Still, that is an idea worth looking into. What can they say but yes or no?
