Schoolkids sure are getting uppity these days, aren't they? And they call that pickin' cotton? Why, Mr. Legree's schoolkids can out-pick those Yankee schoolkids any day of the week, especially if he applies his "board of edumacation" correctly.

Still, my great-great-grandpappy would bawl like a striped ape if he saw the sorry state of "farm machinery" these days. It's a cryin' shame, I tell ya.

Back to Colorado ...

Here's the Martin L. King, Jr. Cultural Center in Pueblo, CO:

Until 1963, however, it operated as an orphanage for black children: "In 1905 The Colored Orphanage and Old Folks Home was known as "the only home for colored children in an area of seven states." It was later named Lincoln Home which was established at 2713 Grand. The institution was the offspring of The Colored Orphanage and Old Folks Home, located then at 306 E. First.

From here.

Amen.

LF? Ever heard of the Granada War Relocation Center? It wasn't long ago. It was called Camp Amache. Here's a handy link.

An article and map of other locations.

PBS: "Most of the 110,000 persons removed for reasons of 'national security' were school-age children, infants and young adults not yet of voting age."

Have you seen this plaque in your hometown?:

In 1874 white miners drove 160 Chinese out of Nederland, and in 1879 the people of Leadville were proud to announce that they had no Chinese living in their community. Thanks Jeb. I learned something today.

It wasn't restricted to American citizens of Japanese ancestry, LF. Here's a wiki comment on German-American interment during WWI and WWII:

"German-American Internment refers to the detention of German and German-American citizens in the United States during World War I and World War II. Unlike the Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II and the Italian Americans who were subject to the same fate, these internees have never received an apology or reparations. (footnote omitted) ..." From here.

This wiki comment is regarding the Italian "non-citizen" internments during WWII:

"Italian American internment refers to the internment of non-citizen Italians in the United States during World War II. Unlike the Japanese Americans who were interned during the war, they have never received reparations. However, unlike Japanese-Americans, who were rounded up whether citizens or not, only non-citizen Italians were rounded up. (footnotes omitted) ..." From here.

Some more in-depth sources are here and here.

At this point, the best I can do is to speculate, LF. That said, perhaps The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 has had a lingering effect:

"In the spring of 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed by Congress and signed by President Chester A. Arthur. This act provided an absolute 10-year moratorium on Chinese labor immigration. For the first time, Federal law proscribed entry of an ethnic working group on the premise that it endangered the good order of certain localities. ... From here.

The Act.

"... It was not until the Immigration Act of 1965, which eliminated previous national-origins policy, that large-scale Chinese immigration to the United States was allowed to begin again after a hiatus of over 80 years." From here.

Amen.

LF? Did you know Colorado had an anti-miscegenation law for many years?:

"... For 93 years, including 13 years when Colorado was a territory, it was a crime for a white person to wed a black or mulatto person. In Colorado's 1953 statutes, under the heading "Miscegenation" is CRS 90-1-2:

"All marriages between negroes or mulattoes of either sex and white persons are declared to be absolutely void." Note the wording. Not just "void", but "absolutely" void. But there was an escape clause in the final sentence:

"Nothing in this section shall be construed as to prevent the people living in that portion of the state acquired from Mexico from marrying according to the custom of that country."

The language referred to Colorado south of the Arkansas River plus the area west of the Continental Divide acquired after war with Mexico by the peace treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Under customs of Mexico, marriage could not be denied because of skin color. ...
"

From here.

It was repealed in 1957.

Amen.

Okay, LF. We'll return to Colorado here in a bit. Right now, however, let's look at the West Coast. Have you ever heard of the race riots in California, such as the Watsonville Riot? Here is some info:

"Because of jealousy and hatred of the Filipinos, Caucasian Americans precipitated racial violence. The first race riot occurred in Exeter, California, on the night of October 24, 1929 after the Americans were displaced by Filipinos in harvesting Kadota figs and Emperor grapes. A mob of 300 men stormed a Filipino camp, stoned and clubbed about 50 Filipinos, and burned the barn. About 200 Filipinos were driven out of the district.

The most explosive riot occurred in Watsonville where Filipinos had been constantly harassed. The Northern Monterey Chamber of Commerce adopted anti-Filipino resolutions. On January 11, 1930, a small Filipino club leased a dance hall from two Americans in Palm Beach. The thought of Filipinos dancing with white women angered Watsonville citizens. On January 20, 1930, about 200 Americans hunted Filipinos on the streets, and on the following day, the dance hall was raided. Two days later, Filipinos were beaten and one was killed by a mob of 500 white Americans who also destroyed the Filipino quarters. ...
" From The Philippine History Site.

~and~

Kent, Washington

Amen.

Just to throw my two cents in here; from what a Filipino friend told me, prior to WWII the UK and the US regarded the Philippines kinda like the Bush family considered the Middle East, best summed up by something I saw around 2003:

...except they had more sand than oil. Basically, the Phillipines was a terrific jumping-off point for Asia, so they put military bases there. Plus, the native women would suck your pecker for a nickel. They weren't considered "niggers" per se, but they might as well have been. "Farm machinery" is more like it.

Besides, the one thing people get wrong nowadays is that racism means you've ever used the word "nigger" (just ask Paula Dean), as though one word is the defining line. It was rarely used prior to the 1920's, and was just one of a slew of designations "racists" used (in fact, the word "racist" is a modern construct).

Them people was colored, boss. Yessuh. All of 'em, from the wogs in the east to the nigras down souf, to the amber waifs in grain.

And they still are, dagnabbit. Now get off my lawn.
