Have any of you ever...?

Have any of you ever had something of value given to you by someone you only know online (like a forum member, etc.)? Or, have you ever given something of value to such an acquaintance? Was it a gift, a loan/borrow thing? If you are willing to share, what was it? Who was it? Tell the story if you can.

I am writing an article on the subject and I would be interested in any TRUE story you might have. Maybe you know of someone else who has given and/or received and can share that account. What was the effect, if any, on the relationship? Was it a good experience or is it a regret?

Any input you can offer would be appreciated. If you would rather not disclose this info in public, you are welcome to IM me your story in full confidence.

Thanks.

Crika and Muffy gave each other a chance at a new life, as did Dacarlo and Jazz. Start there for your research, they are all members on this forum.

I sent someone here money to buy something they wanted, but didn't have the spare cash for. I'd rather not mention names as then it would appear I feel they owe me something other than the thanks I got at the time. True gifts have no caveats, and are given with nothing expected in return. Feels good man.

That is very true, Creepy. No prob on the name thing, I understand. I'm just trying to get a feel for people's experience with this sort of thing. I have spoken to people who have had good stories and experiences and one so far who had a shitty experience. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

And FuQall, I gather you are talking about romance, but that shit has been done to death. I wanted to come at it from the money/gift/loan angle. Mostly because I know it happens a fair amount. I have given someone money before and know several others who have as well. So I'm really only interested in the more materialistic standpoint, but thanks.

I have repeatedly donated large sums of money towards Ukrainian efforts to maintain territorial integrity.

I shall continue to do so as slush funds allow.

The Secret Santa thread might be of some use to you, Star. It was a thread where we all were given random names from a list of people who wanted to participate in a secret santa Christmas thing with each other.

And mind you, there were people in that list from the US, New Zealand, Australia, England, Malaysia and Canada.

Some gifts sent were very sweet, things people wished for.

In this forum itself, we also had members who were sick, who died, who needed support (monetary terms) for surgery etc, and many contributed.

Hope that's helpful. (jazebelle wrote this)

I got something from an Australian girl (it was hidden in a Queensryche CD), and I have given money to an American man.

I was given a book and a letter of recommendation once from someone I knew online. I learned a lot from that book, and the letter of recommendation helped me get into a school I wanted to attend.

I miss that person.

Thanks for the accounts, but the secret santa thing, while really nice and all, is sort of provoked altruism for the sake of participation as opposed to Coincidence's: "I have given money to an American man" (very good of you BTW, I've heard Norwegians are generous).

That's what I mean, but with a little more detail please? Feel free to frame any account in a way that assures the level of privacy you're comfortable with. Also, include the word "blimp" in your post if you would prefer I didn't rename your characters after the members of the musical group "The Monkeys" for an added layer of security when I write my article.

I drove from Houston to Detroit, MI once to pick up a young man I only knew online. Brought him back to Houston, and he resided with my son and niece and I for about 5 months. On another occasion my son and I drove to Little Rock from Shreveport, picked up an online friend and all three of us drove to north central TN to the home of yet another friend, where we rolled up in his driveway about dusk and surprised him with a gift of several hundred dollars to bail him out of a serious financial bind. That same guy from TN lived in the residence I shared with my son here for several months thereafter. He came here again in July of 2010, and he and I drove to Oregon together, then back here. The vehicle we drove on that trip was supplied by yet another online friend. After returning from Oregon, he stayed here about 90 days, then I drove him home to TN with a couple of mopeds he'd acquired from a guy he did some work for.

Simple Simon, now that's the sort it f thing I'm looking for, but with more details. SS, you have to fill in a lot of blanks there, especially the car bit. Someone gave you a car? And everyone else, if you share, anonymity can be preserved without making the story devoid of interesting details.

Thanks.

No one gave me a car. He rented an econobox for me for the two week, 6,500 mile trip.My pickup gets about 16 mpg, whereas the Nissan Cube he rented got 38 mpg on the highway. plus it had working AC. My truck would probably have made the trip - in August with no AC and at 3 times the gasoline cost, nearly.

That same friend gave another guy I know a car, and has made substantial gifts to many people.

not at this board, but at another board, there was a group of people who got close over the course of several years. one woman, whom i talked to on the phone fairly frequently (and occasionally to her kids, and her kids talked to my kid) had a very rough patch. i sent her what was (for me) a chunk of change because she finally left the guy who was abusing her. she didn't ask for the money, i just sent it to her because it was christmas and she had just moved her kids into a shelter. that way, she could keep her cell phone and get a few things for her kids. i still talk to her, and she's doing much better. she offered to pay it back about 2 years later when she was back on her feet, and i just told her that the time would come when she would see someone in need, and she could help out. one of her kids is in college now, and the other one is a senior in high school.

one of the best investments i ever made.

it's easy to be cynical. however, having lost my home and possessions in katrina and having been helped get my life back together in ways big and small afterwards made me realize that even help that seems small to you when you give it may mean the world to the person who's getting it.

thanks, mousie, but that's ok.

my only point was that i do think people can use things like boards to help in meaningful ways. dac's post kinda reiterates that.

Good stuff everyone and special kudos to Magnolia. I like your outlook. Keep them coming. It sounds like it's a fairly common occurrence. Anyone know of anyone who has been screwed by such a transaction somehow? I suspect it is less common than the good experiences but I don't know.

Thanks for the feedback. And if any of you are feeling flush, I could use US$1000 if you're up to extending me a little temporary credit. You can trust me, I have good teeth and my asshole doesn't sputter when I sleep most of the time. You can ask around about my character, just don't talk to my mom, she's had a hair across her ass ever since I shot her six cats during Thanksgiving dinner seven years ago because the fucking beasts wouldn't stop staring at me. It was basically just a big misunderstanding, that's what I told her. But I digress. Where were we?

Oh yeah. Thanks.
