Bombs don't solve problems. They simply eliminate some, while simultaneously creating others. Pretty much like any other human action.

US politics are just too confusing to try and understand, so off to the bookies.

A week or so ago Bernie was 14-1 ( become president ), today 8-1.

Perhaps the Panama Papers play a part. It is clear that lots of people did not really understand how much the elite cheat in tax.
There was a good divide and conquer thing going, where the middle class concentrated on hating poor people and immigrants.

Now the focus has shifted a little.

Well ol' lurky turkey grasshoppa, it appears a move to Switzerland for you is now out of the question.

UBI is a freight train heading towards our reality. The sooner we prepare for it, the better.

UBI, by which I assume you mean Universal Base Income , is an old notion. Popular with authors of speculative utopian fiction, there are some basic requirements to make such a reality. Whilst the most important driver of achieving that state is economic, the social elements to enable it do not, for the most part, exist. While western technological societies are perfectly capable of high enough levels of production to make it possible, our social systems for the most part are not equipped to do so.

Specifically, if we assume that modern production systems can produce sufficient goods from the labors of a few to support the many, what will motivate those few to so labor to the benefit of others? Modern capitalism is designed to maximize production, but even more, it is designed to concentrate the wealth created under the control of a very few - most of whom are themselves incapable of running that technological system If those whose labors are irredeemably necessary to operating such systems see all around them vast masses of their fellows doing nothing to contribute to the operation of society, and what is worse, a tiny minority whose only skills are manipulating people and legal systems to their own aggrandizement, where then is the motivation to invest the effort?

Persons acting purely out of their own desire to learn, and to create from that learning are rare, and I strongly doubt they exist in sufficient numbers to support such mass expropriation of the wealth their efforts may create.

A few years ago this was a silly dream like green energy or women's rights or basically any positive progress.
There will always be angry old men who scoff at these things, even after they become the norm, but the rest of humanity will have to change their attitude.

More and more jobs are being lost to automatisation, so to discard the notions of "jobs define people" or "work equals job" or "having a job equals contribution to society" is a good start.

production also requires consumption

i dont think that UBI will take the form alot of people hope it will but i do think that the consumerist society will have to work out a way to fund itself. mega corps gonna have to keep mega-ing, it's not gonna suddenly be all like "oh we got no-one to sell to let's just dismantle the whole operation"

mass marketing and mass production and mass consumption are all reliant on each other. a fully automated mass production society is basically making a noose for itself

we'll end up in some mental scenario at some point where companies are subsidising their own products just so people can still buy them

In short, Bernie Sanders is a carpetbagging dream weaver with no experience in creating anything of value to anyone else. He is the quintessential "Liberal" which is the misnomer we have applied to this class of idealistic fools. These neo-liberals, in their attempt to solve complex problems with simplistic "feel good" non-solutions only create more problems.

Bernie is a sandbag in the coming war.

was talking to an american politics student the other day and he called some fucking russian dictator a liberal, which i questioned, but then came to understand it's the simple phrasing of american politics that simply anyone who isnt strictly right wing in terms of economics is a liberal, even if they are literal social iron fist nutcases

that must be pretty limiting in political discourse

Hitler and Stalin were Left Wing, in that they were both extremely idealistic. To be Right Wing these days is to have little or no ideals...to revert to divine market forces without regard for ideology.

But they gave us jets and rockets, and some pretty intense movies...

But you're right in that it would be better if the movement never happened, because of the post war reaction to all things Hitler ('If Hitler would have hated it, it must be good')- things like right angles in architecture and major chords in classical music, people who happen to be white, young and male actually taking pride in themselves and their history and culture.

To be successful as an artist you have to delve into buckets of slime, because that's what Hitler would have hated.

Ours and future generations can only hope the pendulum he started will stop swinging so wildly.

Man, fuck right lines in architecture. I want tree houses and slides with my fascism.

But I'll go with history being a list of things humans needed to try out. The sacrifices are not in vain! A better and wiser being will rise from our ashes.
