No car, no smartphone, no job, no kids

It's harder than ever to relate to other people anymore, or the soul-destroying compromises they make.

The question is, how do I be open about this, without seeming like an intolerable saint, rubbing people's noses in the shit of socitey?

I dont think you need worry about coming across as any form of saint.

When you suggest you dont own a car, you reveal youre probably a cyclist. No one likes cyclists.
No kids. Thats good, youre a cyclsit, kids ride bikes and kids shouldnt have kids.
No job, yeah, youre a bum. Get a paper route.

Smartphone? But a phone regardless? Yeah, thats just smug. Its probably harder to find just a phone, than a smartphone. You can use a smartphone as a phone. But smartphones are probably why you dont have a paper route.

You are judging yourself based on what makes you different. That's our job. We are supposed to constantly remind you that you aren't enough like us to be accepted.
Your interpretation of what's wrong with you is based on an external locus (to get all jungian)

I don't have the right car
I have a smart phone but refuse to carry it around all day answering it's every beep
The happiest I've ever been in my adult life is when I was unemployed.
My kid was raised by someone else, somewhere else.

Your scenario isn't that unappealing, but it does make you stand out as nonconforming and the only nonconforming people we tolerate are hipsters who spend money to prove how unique they are. The advice "stop giving a fuck" applies here and if I could find an example of you giving a fuck I'd give you that advice.

Thanks for the kind words, handsome.

But I don't see what's wrong with me. My position in this is way more annoying - like some teenage narcissist I see everybody else doing stupid, hypocritical things because it is sanctioned or demanded by society.

It becomes exhausting to see grown people hitting themselves. I think you have to sink down into that consumer world to ignore it.
I can't realistically discuss this with a guy with debts*, a job and kids without making him feel hopeless.

*Oh, did I mention I don't have any debt either? Not something you want to mention at a dinner party.

It makes sense anywhere. Cycling is a backward step. A step away from progress. Its almost, Catholic. Im sure its great in the 3rd world. ie: haul water from the creek, instead of utilising plumbing.

No debt is fine for those who have limited vision, if you own assets. If you dont, then youre just making excuses for being a drop out. If you have no job, you owe a debt to people that do have jobs, and debt. Youre making silly justifications for not trying.

Debt, makes money. You should google leverage.

Youre not drug fucked by any chance are you?

I drink a beer and smoke a joint once in a while.

And I'm not making excuses. I wish my position was more irrational, but it doesn't seem to be.

Define progress.

Is progress making a society in which personal transportation is essential and thus the purchases, taxes, and fees are entrenched, mandatory, for functioning within that society? Because I see that as a means of retarding progress.

Bicycles are a reasonable option for personal transport - in an urban environment. One not excessively hilly, nor rainy, nor burning hot in summer or freezing cold in winter. As long as everything you might want/need is concentrated in a fairly dense cluster, and/or urban transit systems accommodate bicycles for longer journeys or one's that involve significant burdens, fine.

Most cities in this country have at least one of the drawbacks listed above, if not all of them through the year. Relatively few mass transit systems do accommodate bicycles in the US.

Sure, motor vehicles can be a burden in many ways. They are also quite possibly the greatest aid to personal freedom ever devised.

I have been debt free for several years, it's why I ride a bicycle, have an old truck and live in an old house without a wife an kids. I get what you are saying.
I can't relate to people around me because it means throwing out rational thought and individual perspective to pretend to that I share their insecurities and biased influences.

i have a job and a smart phone

no car, no kids, no debt, no credit card, no debit card, no overdraft facility

i do work for myself though, or at least for our family business and cannot get behind the idea of working for someone else again

i don't really see what level of self satisfaction you can draw from that though. living one way is for some people and living another way is for others

it's also easy to highlight what may be a failing in yourself and to try and turn it into a merit. you can't achieve (along normal perceptions of "achievement") some things that maybe you'd like to achieve and your choices are either accept that, work to achieve them (which you wont) or turn your lack of achievement into a virtue, as if it's entirely by design

I'm more trying to make my merits into failings.

There must be a good reason why humans will kill each other and every ideal they have, to get the things. The alternative - there is no good reason - is terrifying.

" living one way is for some people and living another way is for others"

Most definitely. In the eyes of 95% of earth's population my life is lazy and decadent. There is no fundamental judgement within our grasp.

And cars are definitely useful. But the culture and society around cars seems very ...problematic. With all the pollution and death, you know. A bit of self-inforced moderation would have been nice.

Unless youre independently wealthy, there seems little point. This thread shows youre too conceited to benefit from it. Apparently owning a smartphone makes one a sheep, as does having a job.

How many would die if ambulance, police or fire services personnel rode bicycles?

On an individual level, we can engage in far more recreational pursuits in a day than most in the old world did in a year, thanks to the car.

You cant relate to people with smartphones and jobs, because you dont have a job and you dont want a job. Of course you cant, you dont have a job. When you attempt to discuss it, you just come across as justifying a mere existence. Not everyone NEEDS a smartphone, but they are cheap, often free with plans, why would someone pass them up?

Their existence is no different to TV. People used to go to the cinema to see a movie and see the news. The norm home access was a paper and a radio. Its called progress. Something might be lost, its still progress.

The device you are on now, is essentially for fun. Whatever you use it for is as good an answer as to why others need smartphones.

Don't do the black and white thing. Of course cars can be awesome and are often necessary, I am only talking about private cars.

I haven't called anybody sheep.

I mention smartphones because they seem to often have a bad influence on peoples attention span and general participation in the world. Of course, making sheep drop off a cliff is awersome, but it doesn't happen enough. And more seriously, if I get in a car, there is a risk someone checking the phone will ram it and break my spine.

Who says I don't want a job? I'm just very picky.
You're generally assuming all kinds of things that aren't actually relevant, apparently to troll me a bit.

Your question is answered by your statement.

People who want jobs, work. And from there they climb to the job they want.

Yioure a drop out, justifying his existence, and pointing fingers at those that still try.

I had an excellent job as a language teacher before I got brain damage. I would love to do it again, except I can't write on a smartboard and that's very important. Being a dropout is not a choice. It's DESTINY.
Again, it's not a black and white thing. It's basically about how people spend their time. I need an argument why I should strive to work a lot.

Is it just the decent thing to do, when so many people work their ass off? It keeps the terrible droput label at bay and prevents fingerpointing?

I've mentioned this online to Atheists before, and they become bothered by it. But that is exactly what it is, if there is no second life. Very poetic.

Disabled people do some of the most menial tasks because they want to work, to contribute, to participate in some way.

Terrifying? Relief more like. Its not rest, its not eternity, its just no more. When youre dead nothing exists, you, the universe, nadda. For all those who have passed, its already so...
