I will always vote for Universal health care and this is why.
I don't want my waiter or cook sick with the flu when I eat out during the day because they have to pay the rent and can't afford to see a doctor.
Why do those that defend not having health care for all not see this?

They DO see it. The problem is that the acquisition of wealth erodes compassion for those less fortunate. And/Or worse, keeping millions of people broke and living in fear and poverty without hope is a nice way to slowly funnel money from the bottom to the top.

My politics have changed so much during my life. When I was a kid, I believed my parents and had a proto-FOX News view of the world.

Around the time my first kid was born, things started to change, and eventually I swung almost fully left.

Now I've come to realize that the far right is just a tool for the rich to enact laws to exploit the middle class down. The far left has become so weakened by social media that it cannot be taken seriously. And presidents serve no purpose, regardless of their party.

If I had to describe my politics these days, I guess I'd be a moderate anarchist.

FIFY.

Anyway, I am concerned that he is being short sighted and somewhat alienating the US from the rest of the world. I also found it amusing that his meeting in Korea was a flop... I honestly do not know enough about virtual powerhouses, but I am not convinced Russia would be the only powerhouse involved in the alleged hacking. I am looking at you, China.

On a personal note, in watching his speeches, and news aside from fox, I do think he has growing to do in the realms of both racism and sexism, and I strongly believe he could benefit from a psychologist. I do not mean this in a caustic way, but instead more as a helping hand.

Globally, lines are being drawn in the sand. All of my life I have never felt this close to a world war breaking out. I also firmly believe money could be invested in different ways to ease the illegal immigration. A wall, though marginally effective, has serious limitations. I feel like the whole premise is just a tangible show of power.

I, living with socialized health care, know it does not come without cost, but feel as though everyone can equally benefit from it, so it is not an unfair investment. But, I will be honest, I know canadians that go to the usa or overseas to get treatments because of the time it takes to get help here... lots of waiting lists... and our province has been cutting health care this year, which is starting to show at hospitals now.

What a tragedy that we will be deprived of your well-considered opinion of American politics.

Look, Trump is POTUS because the Dems ran an unelectable criminal in Hillary Clinton. She ran a shit campaign to boot. Donald Trump is president and the Left can't accept it. What has he done, that no other POTUS has done, that is so heinous? He Tweets and I have a love hate relationship with that fact. As for the accusations of racism I've seen no evidence of that. If you can show me one, I'll stand corrected. As for sexism? He's guilty as hell along with 90% of men everywhere. Deal with it, men are wired certain ways. Those who feign sensitivity are liars.

At any rate, Trump isn't Hitler and he's done a bang up job on the economy so far, if we're to believe the numbers. They're probably valid since the Democratic lackeys in the media would have gone on 24/7 if the numbers looked like Barry's.

I am only getting into this because it's you. I really have little interest in arguing politics with products of the West's indoctrination centers known as universities. I know what's coming and have for years, so why argue about it? The last thing I'll say is that I have always been for universal health care for LEGAL US citizens. I just don't want our federal government running it. But they have it now, and what the feds take they keep. It is nearly impossible to take something back once we give it to them and they fuck up everything they touch. This is why the founders designed a tiny federal government. Worked good on paper.

Anyhoo, Trump is not the devil, but the Dems are getting pretty close lately. However, that's a discussion for never here.

Stay healthy, kiddo.

Nope. I still don't know what I'm talking about. This is not due to me being stupid. Nor am I poorly educated or ignorant of current affairs.

I believe it's mostly due to perspective and terminology. I used to think that NZ's National party was like Republicans because it leans to the right and our Labour party was more like Democrats, and a bit more left.

However, it has become apparent that NZ politicians, regardless of party, would all be considered pretty left-leaning by USA standards (except for the odd fringe dwellers, who don't get enough votes to matter).

"Liberals" in NZ means something different than it does in the USA, as do many of the other isms, and I think that many 'mericans have a serious prejudice against socialism that clouds things.

Socialism in its pure form tends to have bad outcomes, but I don't think that should mean that all socialist ideas should be rejected automatically (e.g. free healthcare).

I've explained to Americans my views on healthcare (pay a little tax, get free or at least reasonably priced health care - pretty basic) and have been told I'm a socialist, which is rather weird for me given that by NZ standards, I lean a little to the right (I'm not a fan of unchecked welfare).

It amazes me that the greatest (arguable these days) country in the world can't give its citizens guaranteed health care at a reasonable cost and that the insurers and pharmaceutical companies can get away with what they do.

I've spent the last couple of years trying to get my head around why Americans oppose sensible regulation and anything resembling social responsibility on the part of the Govt to ensure basic health care, education and a reasonable standard of living (other than the aforementioned fear of socialism).

What I really struggle with is that so many people with lower incomes think someone like Trump is going to save them.

I can't assume that half of America is fucking retarded but have yet to come up with a better theory. So, in fairness, I must assume that the problem lies with me and may be due to growing up in a country where your taxes actually get spent on something other than blowing shit up, and where I don't have to take out a loan just to get some basic medical treatment or fill a prescription. It clearly must be unreasonable of me to have such expectations, or to expect that elected representatives would spend their time looking after my needs rather than lining their own pockets or engaging in pointless pissing contests.

Like I said. I don't know what I'm talking about and I sure as shit don't understand why people like Trump.

Nice to see you're still a bitter old prick that has to be a cunt because you're too dimwitted to have a proper argument (great example of that in your climate change thread, btw). I guess your penis still can't function properly so you have to compensate. Sucks to be you.

I agree with you pretty much all the way around, muffy. I don't want unregulated socialism or unregulated capitalism. Both lead to human suffering.

I find it interesting that such a large percentage of people in this country who oppose socialist ideas still cash their social security checks.

But somewhere in the middle is a balance that provides checks and balances on the health of society AND the economy.

Checks and balances used to work in this country.

I'm surprised it has gone the way it has. I never would have thought the American public would be so complacent about the kind of things Trump claims some sort of constitutional immunity applies to. I would have thought any President with his disregard for Congress, convention and seeming belief that he is above the law would have had people reaching for their pitchforks. It's really weird to watch freedom-loving Americans embracing someone that smells like a dictator, without even wrinkling their noses. WTF is wrong with y'all?

For the record: I'm not happy with him. I think he is a criminal, and I KNOW he is a liar.

Hey! Nice to see you. Post more.

Frankly, I'd be a little concerned about the IQ of someone who hadn't concluded Trump is a liar by now. I suppose the real question is how much people think that matters? There seems to have been a general decline in expecting traditional values and virtues to be desirable and necessary qualities in the USAs elected officials.

As for criminality, I suppose technically you're not a criminal until someone successfully convicts you for something. A while back I did some digging in to some of the claims that have been made against Trump (including those originally brought by his first wife) and I found the depositions, statements of claim and manner in which they were "resolved" profoundly disturbing. IMO, he should be doing hard time by now. The fact he isn't indicates all sorts of other unpleasant probabilities.
