Here's the thing: I believe "all" it takes to cause a seismic shift in American politics is to get a 50% increase in voter participation over the 2016 election, *and* for that participation rate to hold through non-presidential elections.

Ummm, yeah.

And to do that you need excitement. Bernie or Tulsi needs to be the nominated if we want to see record voter turnouts. Because anyone else and we will have resistance and we WILL see the Trump again.

Grasshopoa, this is from an honest man who not only knows where he is politically, but what he is:

...(George) Hamilton believes that it's irresponsible for actors to share their opinions on political issues entirely, because entertainers "have no qualifications."

"They're given an unusual amount of credibility," he said. "A lot of young actors do it and they shouldn't. The political (people) are happy to use your persona."

The former "Dynasty" star continued: "I think it's unfair to the voter."...

From here.

Amen.

POTUS is/was an entertainer... are you saying he should keep his political views to himself? I mean, I wouldn't disagree, but kind of hard when he's supposed to be running the country.

I have trouble squaring one American telling another not to express a political opinion.

Of course conservatives want celebrities to be quiet. It looks bad for some people of privilege to recognize and call out the imbalance when people born into money are floating within a system created to maintain and expand the imbalance.

Fuck Zorro.

Hamilton gave his honest opinion. He didn’t propose a call to action upon his opinion. And I posted it because I agree with him.

Pigeonholing President Trump’s curriculum vitae to entertainer strikes me as an overly broad expansion of the word’s meaning, to put it mildly. Of course, that’s in vogue with some factions these days. Just look at “racism”, for example.

As for buggering Zorro, I seriously doubt George is a breech loader.

Amen.

Well, to be fair, "entertainer" sounds better than trust fund baby and conman, but I guess they should go on his CV too.

He didn't but telling celebrities to quiet their dissent is a popular conservative tactic, which is, frankly UNamerican.

Calling Trump an entertainer is entirely appropriate. He was, if you recall, on a television show that ran for a few seasons. The fact that he's in office now doesn't change that.

I have no problem with opinions. I have no problem with differing opinions. What I have a problem with is closed-minded opinions.

That isn't directed at anyone, btw. I just wanted to clarify that I think opinions and free speech are important, but that it's much more important to try to see the other person's side and reconsider your own opinion honestly.

Otherwise, there will be no progress.

Oh yeah. Here’s another piece from the museum:

Entertainers wrongly assume that their fame, money, and influence arise from broad knowledge rather than natural talent, looks, or mastery of a narrow skill.” ~ Victor Davis Hanson

Amen.

This touches on something I posted earlier, JEB, about how I can't help but wonder if there is a higher duty of care on "influencers" to be more careful what they say (although I wouldn't limit it to entertainers). Maybe they have a duty to just shut the hell up and not use their influence in areas they are not well informed about. The difficulty is, it becomes a bit of an arbitrary or subjective exercise to try and determine who should have a voice and who shouldn't. There are a lot of people I'd like to see shut the hell up, but plenty would disagree with me. I suppose, like anything else in democratic societies, at the end of the day, there is also an onus on the person listening to what others say as no one is forcing them to agree. Unfortunately, the stupid and gullible have shown profoundly poor judgment regarding whose views they value.

Good term, Muffy. Influencers. I think you and I share the same concern. I admired George for putting it out there so candidly and that’s why I posted it.

IMHO, any political candidate should think long and hard before soliciting celebrity endorsements. Frankly, I’ve grown to view many of them with varying degrees of contempt as a result of them indulging their big pie holes. For me, it is tantamount to self-inflicted type-casting.

Amen.

Agreed, although I did find Kanye's trip to the Whitehouse to be enormously entertaining. "Influencers" is what they call pretty much anyone with a large twitter following these days. I don't actually like the term, but it seemed appropriate in this context.

I'm surprised you didn't notice the author of that quote was presuming to know the mind of the entertainers.

Of course I noticed, fubarooski. We all do dat. To be precise, Victor shared his perception arising from his observations. Someone says/writes something; that something is heard/read by others; and those others formulate perceptions.

Indeed, perception can really be a wobbly and wonky bidness, fraught with hazards such as gaslighting. Take, for example, the pack of pundit pretenders and kookie candidates who scream racism on cue, no matter what President Trump says or does. That nonsense is straight out of Saul Alinsky’s playbook.

And, yes, I know the meaning of hyperbole. 😎

Amen.

It's like if you live in the deep south real-life Water Boy mama house those in the city will never understand why they vote the way they do.
And those living in the hood the southern boys will never understand how life in the city can be like.
So one side tend to go conservative because they actually do see the value in their hard work.
While the other side goes Liberal because you can work three jobs and not make rent.
Then there's Bernie.
I know Republicans thinking about voting for him.
