Thumbs up CHiPsJr and the Pragmatic Problematic in our Attic

I have been enjoying the writings of our long-time venerable member, CHiPsJr. This is ham not spam, with some tater salad and warm buns on the side.

Grab a fork and plate and help yourself. Goes great with Dickel.

Amen.

On sneetches ‘n’ speeches

This is really good.

Amen.

p.s. Hey, CJr. You might check the “are” in the sixth line of the sixth paragraph.

CHiPsJr? I know, and sadly so, that this wasn’t an off-the-cuff remark:

“"The Book That Turned Me Gay," a story which could well prove career-ending for me... .”. From here

Was there any blowback? If so, are you at liberty to share it?

Amen.

Every once in a great while I experience something that expresses my mind far better than someone with my limited abilities could ever communicate on my own. This is one such something:

...What I can't live with is the utterly poisonous environment that crowdsourced policing of modern writing has produced. The use of social media for "dragging" and gang-swarming of writers and artists who challenge the norms of the moment is indecent and contrary to every principle of creativity and authenticity. It is an attempt to impose ideological conformity through fear, to replicate the ethic of a high school ruled through peer-shunning by the "cool kids" on a societal level. History will be brutal, absolutely brutal, in its judgment of those who engage in this practice. ...

Thank you, CHiPsJr.

Amen.

Earlier today, I read this. Your introductory lines hit home:

I read to be entertained.

I read to escape.

In that vein, I would add that I write to be entertained; I write to escape.

Amen.

The only people who reacted angrily to that story were editors of publications I submitted it to.

But HOLY GOD, were some of them angry.

You're welcome. And I'll point you to today's post, where I review the Young Adult novel "American Heart," which sparked a massive backlash by the creativity-policing crowd, and which is a pretty decent book all told.

"The use of The Asylum for "dragging" and gang-swarming of writers and artists who challenge the norms of the moment"

Truth. Challenging the norms around here invited much bullying and ridicule.

Speaking of which, any news about the Troll?

Another good read. The Nathan Heller link you provided is spot-on; his closer is another one of those gems of clarity:

But, without critical autonomy, the enterprise falls apart. The only reason to hire a critic, instead of giving a megaphone to the crowd, is that creative work—books most of all—isn’t processed as a collective. People make sense of art as individuals, and their experiences of the work differ individually, too. A reviewer speaks for somebody, even if he or she doesn’t speak for you.

Amen.

CHiPSJr, I just finished reading Wizards Die By Stages. I certainly wouldn’t presume to read your mind, but I thought you might find it interesting what popped into mine as I got deeper into the story. I’m sure you’re familiar with Picasso’s Guernica.

I think I know why, but I’m trying to figure out if it’s too much of a stretch. And that’s fun.

By the way, it’s a good read. Thanks!

Amen.

Glad you liked it. I've seen Guernica and I'm aware of why it was painted, but I don't grasp the connection.

In fact I did. I think you don't grasp the magnitude of our relationship and why I need updates.

I’m not sure I grasp it, either, i.e., I’m still trying to connect the rear of my mind with the front. It is a curiosity to me as to why Guernica kept popping into my mind. I mentioned it to you in the outside chance you might be able to provide enlightenment.

Our subconscious can be a consuming mystery.

In the meantime, I intend to continue reading Problematic. It adds an extra layer of enjoyment for me when, as with you, I am acquainted with the writer and/or artist.

Amen.

Put this li’l stinger in my Wish-I’d-Said-That file:

Critics of the author's perspective choice are asking for a different book rather than evaluating the one they're reading.” From here.

While I was reading Gutfield’s column about big brother is us, your closing remark about the “baying mob” came to mind. These days, virtually everyone has a digital flamethrower at their fingertips.

Amen.

The Troll has recently undergone yet another round of major surgeries, in an attempt to correct the problems created by previous surgeries. When this all began he was in excellent physical condition. Today he weighs less than you did in primary school, Dane. He refuses to quit, for which I admire him greatly. I doubt I (or any of you) would have had the fortitude to endure what he has, and continues to endure.
