Dear Mr. The Wraith By Dingle - 05/10/02
Q: Who says bitching and moaning doesn't get you anything?
A: Not me!

Truth be told, I did this for myself.

I'm sure most of you have noticed the change in the points display, and some of you have already whined about it (fiend). I, and i'm sure alot of other people, was fed up with one-line posts (which encompasses 9/10 posts here) taking up half a screen. That has now been alleviated.

Also, as an added bonus, there are some points display options in your user options. You can:

- Prevent your points from being displayed to other people
- Choose not to see any points at all

This is sure to make Wraith happy, and sharing the same sentiment I am quite thrilled.

Cheers and happy point whoring

while i like the fact that the posts are more streamlined vertically, it stretches some of the posts out and i have to scroll horizontally to read some of them. any way for that to be fixed?

*bitches and moans*

thanks dingle. you do rock.

i think i am having the same problem as morgana, i have to scroll horizontally to read posts, and when i first saw it it looked so fucked i reported the thread as being screwed up.

ie, don't know which version but not the latest, 800x600

doesn't seem like anything changed other than the way the info is arranged. I reckon we'll adjust soon enough, but it'll throw dad off somethin fierce for a bit. I'm sure it answered some need that I wasn't aware of, so kudos I guess.

I'm sure there's more to it other than the fact that it violated Wraith's standards of measure. I can't imagine doin all that work based on one person's complaints. I'll take it on faith that this is an issue I just wasn't aware of.

Having said that, this would seem to be one of the few legitimate uses of a poll, or referendum if you like. I wasn't aware that a problem existed until I clicked my favorites list and found out it had been solved - whatever it was.

yeah i am a bit confused.....the point was to make it so you don't have to see the points? i still see them, and they are on the right.

is that it?

"one-line posts taking up half a screen"

i'm not having a go. or maybe i am, but is this really that much of an issue? a little bit of 'scrolling' is good for the soul.

everything now looks a little 'mashed up'. but i suppose like most changes it will take a little getting use to. i just never saw a prob with it in the first place.

yes, it was an issue. the post you just made (the one im quoting) wouldve been twice as long. are you saying youve never noticed nearly every post was mostly blank space?

this is the last whining post im going to respond to other than technical issues like the scrolling. as i said before, if it were up to me id get rid of points altogether, so guess if youre gonna get my sympathy or not.

dingle, fair enough. all i said was 'i never saw it as an issue' until the change actually occured. if the scrolling and stuff pissed people off enough for you to make the change then fair enough. i can live with it. its not really that big of a deal.

to be honest, after 4769 posts i felt that i havent complained enough times about this place so allow me to bitch a little, ok?

I didn't like it at first (still looks weird to me) but I think that's more because most of us don't like change. We come in and things are different and we gah.

RE: by Mugtoe - 2002-05-11 01:02:23
yes, Dingle, it looks nice and compact. Like UJ, however, I never noticed a problem. And some of us do need glasses and the extra cell padding was kinda nice on the eyes, but that's our issue until we bitch enough to get a "large print" version.
Actually, I didn't think of it as whinin. I thought of it as postin an opinion in the thread you created. I know oxsan wouldn't ever say anything and probably would be irritated at me for talkin on his behalf (his eyesight is pretty shot). I'm just glad that we don't have popups or ads of any kind in here. I think my point about the poll was valid though. On the face of it, that's a rather petulant thing for me to say, given that I don't pay a penny for yer bandwidth.

I appreciate the work you must've put into it - really. The point stuff is not somethin I pay much attn to anyway. And most importantly:

"Truth be told, I did this for myself."

RE: by Dingle - 2002-05-11 01:08:21
you shouldve been here when we changed forum colors (twice) mugtoe, ive never seen such pissing and moaning in my life.

this isnt all that big of a change, in fact nothing has changed other than the points were moved from the left to the right.

anyway, people will love it in a few days, asthetically its more balanced too.

dingles right, its just a matter of getting used to it. the colour change was quite funny really. i remember hating it on both occassions and loving it soon after, each time never wanting to go back to the way it was before.

I ain't really bitchin. I'm just tired and grumpy tonight.

The aesthetic of asymmetrical proportions is just as valid, however.

Jesus, you'd think I was a fuckin lawyer. This is not even a pimple on an issue's butt for me. Why am I the one in here actin like it makes a diff in my world?

Wraith, please just shoot me now. I've done crossed over and been handed the tablets.

RE: by MadLucas - 2002-05-11 01:33:54
I like it all scruntched up .. it means I don't have to move my eyes so far to the right and left when I'm reading.

my only suggestion (and it may have been make .. I only skimmed the posts) would be to make the margins set from left to right so that when a one liner is posted it doesn't pull the points margin in to the left. maybe it's just me though and every one elses screens look fine?

once again .. kudos and happy thoughts to dingle, and who ever else put their fingers in the pie, for the tweaking .. I always dig the new layouts and options.

RE: by slight - 2002-05-11 02:43:27
Cool!
Tho I would have aligned the points to the bottom of the table rather than the top to offest the symmetry, and so that on long posts they appear more as a personal despritor of the poster rather than some medal or badge of honour. The nihilist option is great too. Again were it up to me, the message bodies would be aligned with each other so that withheld points would create a blank space.

RE: by Smug Git - 2002-05-11 03:00:31
The genius of this plan to avoid one line posts taking up excess space is that by removing space from the right hand side of the text box, your one line post may now become a two line post!

RE: by sonja - 2002-05-11 06:11:10
Loads more balance .. loads more aesthetically pleasing to the eye .. good job ..

the only thing I dont like is when people disable the visability of their points .. it makes the page look odd and not as even ...

I wouldve disabled mine if they were still on the other side because it wouldnt alter the page structure and you wouldnt notice any imbalance ....

other than that it's cool

EDIT: dingle can it be made so that the points section remains empty in these cases, and not completely disappearing? .. just so you cant see the points without altering the post layout .. that would keep the balance and the look of the page better

very nice.

i dont suppose we could have an option to put the points back where they used to be? I liked those one line posts being half a screen.

obviously wouldn't show other peoples hidden ones etc.

pretty please?
