Dirty Pop

Is it just me, or is it becoming damn near impossible to tell apart all of the white-suburbian pop-music icons?? Is it a prerequisite that you must have blonde hair and be extremely tan (Oh I forgot, Mandy More is now a brunette), or if you are not a solo act that all of the bandmates outfits must somehow match one another in a non-disguistingly awful showing of non-creativity, and must all of their music sound almost identical? It pisses me off.
I will not deny the sex appeal of Brittany and Co., but I shudder to think about them without heavy make-up, proper lighting, and plastic surgery. And what the hell about the boy bands... come on! First of all, these men are approaching their 30's here, and to be honest, most of them are ridiculously non-attractive because of their unoriginal style, but these are the heart-throbs of our youth...
We are no longer selling talent and good music, we now offer something more profitable (I know we all own a Brittany barbie doll) Sex appeal, and poor tasted sex appeal at that. I mean, what is the world coming to when bands are preselected, preassembled, and the marketing project for an monstrous record label. The fact you can produce wonderful music is beside the point. This problem is only growing worse by the decade.

Atleast the 80's had Madonna.
(Just a little ramble after watching Mtv for an hour, only to see one 'rock' music video, the rest being the ever-popular 'pop')

To stay on topic, I agree with you. Pop is tired, and the fact that it still is going relatively strong speaks volumes about our society.

I just can't wait until Britney & Co. start doing Playboy shoots. Oh, and in case noone else has heard, in US Weekly there was an article of how Christina Aguilera has a sex tape (ala: Pamela & Tommy), that might be released to the public.

My guess is, in five years, pop still will be going strong, but with new acts. The Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Britney's of today, will all be living in a van down by the river. *nods*

Pop music is marketed, not created. There is no need for interesting outfits, new looks, or good music, they just have to sell as much as possible NOW.

Oooooh, Christina porn, I might have to dish out the dough for that much entertainment. And Playboy shoots, I think it will happen. I am betting as soon as Brittany and Co. start developing wrinkles due to tan-booth over exposure, they will break down and get desperate and do Hug..er...Playboy in a final attempt to save their career, much like New Kids on the Block's final Christmas cd.

Complaining about pop music is about as original as the music itself.

Oh, and hi.

Posted by pj on 01-02-2002 03:12 PM:

hi Lu. welcome to the asylum.

because everyone else asked for some exposure i won't, i like to fly in the face of normalcy.

with regard music i belive we are currently witnessing an eighties revival in a manner of speaking, at least we are in the uk.

Ok theres Britney, Christina and co who sell because of sex appeal, as do the boy bands. but even some of the rock bands look like they've been assembled these days. Look at Linkin Park, are they not the Backstreet Boys with guitars?

the punk bands, Blink 182, Sum 41 are just doing what Green Day did some seven years ago.

and look at Andrew WK???? whatever his name is, that 'Party hard single was atrocious'. and the video looked like iron maiden or something very eighties.

The only decent bands these days are the older ones, i always put TOOL forward as a good example of this, as everyone here knows, but at least they are good musicians and i hear that in the states they are getting some real airplay which for them is deserved.

If you look at the rest of the hip hop/rap/rock crossover bands (Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach etc) they are doing something that RATM and PWEI (a english band who was ahead of their time) were doing back as far as 1991.

so yeah it is a sad state of affairs but then again most popular musicians are sex symbols, those that arent are real musicians i guess.

thats all i have.

Damn, I would love to hate fuck the shit out of her.

Angry

I hate, repeat HATE the pop music scene.

everyone is a cookie cutter image of what the people-who-have-money in the biznis think will sell. And it does, but the music has no soul.

OH let us go back to when musicians were ugly! ... you know what I mean. Back to when the music was important, not the fashion or the fitness of the singer.

thank god for indy and local bands.

thank god for other muzic clasifications that are not defined by polls or social stigma.

BAH!

Thank you PMG! I didn't know i was appreciated so much!

but on the real side of things, of course we agree on this point. that sort of music is made to appeal to 14 year olds and under.

their fan base is probably 12. When I was that age, i didn't go for this sort of music, but it was there (New kids on the block)--i was saved by older siblings, so i had exposure to better things. These kids dont know that there is something better.

To fix this problem, we should all take underpriveleged, under exposed children who have little hope for liking good music for another 10 years or so. Take them in, listen to music with them, sneak them into smoky bars for local concerts. Take them under your wing. Only this sort of grass roots movement will permanently change the music scene for the better, eliminating the power base of the pop mega-bands.

If you chose not to do this, don't worry...music seems to swing on a pendulum between painfully poppy and extremely dark--the dark is the backlash to the painful pop. And it goes on, the bands play on, and the good music has staying power...look at car commercials today, as we have done in previous threads.

In fact, i think that the pop may be necessary for the good music to thrive as a backlash to the horror we call "mainstream."

when the dark brooding side starts to win, it evolves back into pop, as a string of imitating bands take over, making the music shallower and less original with each passing day.

Love,
Indy

I am a huge Tool fan as well. They are in my opinion, one of the few bands around that remain to release good music(despite what anyone said about Lateralus.) And I was surprised to hear them on mainstream radio stations, but when I heard what they were doing to their songs I almost cried. Yeah ,they now get lots of airplay, its just too bad they cut off half the fucking song so it fits into the little 3 minute radio formula they have. They take the only good songs they have on the radio and cut them down for people without attention spans, because they are used to this manufactured pop shit. If they can't handle it they should go listen to Limp Bizkit and friends. Since MTV's TRL music in general seems to keep getting worse.

I agree. The only problem with local bands is in small towns you get a bunch of marginally talented singers singing old tunes mimicking the original artist's voice, movements etc...

I would rather watch Karioki!
I would much rather watch a small time band that actually has some original material.

Posted by Goat on 01-02-2002 06:23 PM:

Oh please, dont bring Tool into the picture. They're basically pop too now, please remember, pop means popular, and Tool is just that. Every time I get on the internet and someone sends me a picture of themselves, they're always so cool, because they have their tool shirt, or their tool hat. I mean please, dont be a hypocrite. Tool is cool, Tool has a commercial for Lateralus. Whatever. Music is just that, its music. Not to mention Deftones, dont get me started on Deftones. Chino's voice makes me want to throw myself over a cliff and squeal in delight as I get disemboweled by the sharp rocks below, but hey, at least I wouldnt have to listen to his whiney voice anymore. Shit, I listen to concept music, because I like the story it tells, not all this "Life sucks, school is unfair, I wanna kill myself because my cat jumped on my mother's face and smothered her to death." Blah. Its all opinion.

Is it OK for people to listen to music just in order to turn off their brains and enjoy a catchy hook? Or to use the recording artist as eye-candy?

Granted, that's not what y'all choose to do. More power to you. But what, precisely, do you and I lose when the driveling masses choose to anesthetize themselves with pop pap? Why is this worth being angry about?

I used to have this problem where I would like a band, then they would get popular, and I would stop liking them for that reason. Now, I just flat-out don't care anymore. The recording industry tells the people what they want, and gives it to them. Always has, always will. Glean what you like from what's out there, and don't worry about what other people are listening to.

If nothing else, the entertainment machine is giving us pretty people. And, as O'Rourke has noted, we owe them a debt for that. After all, without pretty people, masturbation would be so much duller for the rest of us.
