Exclamation *** IRC Chat Problems ***

*** IRC Chat Problems ***

We're having problems with the servers people. Namely, keeping the three servers here connected to each other. For the time being, those of you with mIRC (or similar) may connect directly to my server.

IP: 193.61.141.28 (irish.mindasylum.net)
port: 6667

MstrG's server is also connected to mine. lo-key's main hub is not connected.

I shall delete this topic when the problem is resolved.

You patience &c. is appreciated.

*scratches nuts*

*wanders off to kick lo-key in the teeth*

Top!

Update: otaku = very odd. I sat in there for a while and every 5 or 10 minutes it would lag out on me. The forum was also inaccessible from this end. MstrG and JoeyCat also noted the same problem.

If we can get lo-key to read this, the ircD needs restarted from your end boyo. Opening up the case and pouring in a pint of lukewarm water may also help. Well, PaintCHiPs suggested that bit. I don't know if it will work myself.

Update:

I'm sure most of you have noticed that the forum has been up and down for the past few hours. Although you might assume it's down to general sillyness, there is something else going on here.

We are not certain, but we think we are the victim of a DOS (denial of service) hack. lo-key is tracking from where he is at the moment and will get to the physical server itself as soon as possible. Certainly, all the signs we see point to some script kiddie trying his or her luck with something they've d/loaded.

Normal service will be resumed ... &c. &c.

(I shall have to leave in about a half hour, alas. I'll be back around 12 hours after that)

It looked that way at first so I hopped into the switch that is infront of it. There is a huge problem going on with that and its continually dropping its connection to the backbone. We have some people looking into it and we just need to sit tight for the time being. I know if this persists much longer you won't be reading this and I will be beating the router with a baseball bat.

Don't mean to tell you your job, but have you made sure you've not got Auto-negotiation set on the ports leading to the router?

Thanks to Our Heroes lo-key and Pangloss, it is almost fixed.

It is fixed. Please return to using server irc.mindasylum.net for logging in.

Still intermittent problems.

The provider for the server had a router problem as lo-key explained above. Nothing anyone in Asylum could do about it.

I need a server.

Time for an update:

The main server has stabilized, and one of the leaf servers (galt) has been reconnected to it. The second leaf (irish), is unable to reconnect. Everyone is now logging on to one of these two servers:

otaku.memoryleak.net
galt.mindasylum.net

I'm attempting to restart irish ... if you're reading this Pangloss, you know what to do.

Boy! THAT WAS A BITCH!

Ok here is what the problem was.

There is a known (well now known) bug in Cisco's Catalyst 6500 series switches. We had two controller cards in there which was for redundancy. The problem was that it also cause a big memory error. It eventually ate up all the memory (also known as a memoryleak ; ) and thats why we kept dying out. When memory reached a certain level it dropped its BGP peer which in turn knocked down its other redundant link.

Go figure, all the redundancy is what caused the problem in the first place
