NJ Governor McGreevy comes out.

He's gay, he had an affair with a dude, and has resigned.

N.J. Gov. McGreevey, saying he’s gay, to resign
Decision comes ahead of expected sexual harassment accusation

NBC, MSNBC and news services
Updated: 4:38 p.m. ET Aug. 12, 2004

TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday afternoon, saying he had had an extramarital affair with another man that could leave the state government vulenerable to undue outside influences.

McGreevey, a former prosecutor who has seen several political aides and fund-raisers accused of corruption, said at a televised news conference that he would step down Nov. 15. Under the state Constitution, state Senate President Richard Codey will serve the rest of his term, which ends at the end of next year.

NBC affiliate WNBC-TV of New York reported that McGreevey was expecting a lawsuit by a former aide Monday accusing him of sexual harassment. The station identified the former aide as Golan Cipel, who resigned as McGreevey’s security adviser in 2002 after months of questioning about his credentials and job qualifications.

Cipel, 33, was criticized because he did not have a security clearance or law enforcement background. He had worked in television news and public relations.

A former Israeli sailor and a published poet, Cipel worked as a spokesman for the Israeli Consulate in New York. During McGreevey’s gubernatorial campaign, Cipel was McGreevey’s liaison to the Jewish community and served as an informal adviser on security matters.

Veteran New Jersey politician
McGreevey, the state’s 51st governor, took office 2˝ years ago, and, despite inheriting a $5 billion budget deficit, he steadfastly refused to boost income taxes for most New Jerseyans, instead raising taxes on millionaires, casinos and cigarettes.

McGreevey, a Democrat, rose from suburban mayor to state chief executive by his tenacious pursuit of party politics, maintaining a power base even after he narrowly lost to Republican Christine Todd Whitman in 1997.

McGreevey never truly stopped that campaign until he won in November 2001, beating Republican Bret Schundler by 15 percentage points.

McGreevey, who was born in Jersey City, graduated from Columbia University in 1978. He earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1981 and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University a year later.

After briefly serving as a county prosecutor, McGreevey became a lobbyist for a pharmaceutical company and then a state government official. While in the Legislature, he voted for Gov. Jim Florio’s $2.8 billion tax hike, which prompted a voter rebellion against Democrats.

McGreevy was a wretched governor and, by many accounts, a horrendously corrupt politician. It's sad that he would contaminate the gay community by his presence, and that he would soil their cause by making himself a martyr to it.

thats funny

The New Jersey Department of Education is already in close communication with our State's Office of Emergency Management, to ensure that accurate information is continually provided through the Department of Education to school districts. And the Department of Education has reached out to each and every district to ensure they have their emergency plans in place, and are working with their local emergency management offices.

For those districts that may be located in a community, where a "Threat Level Red" alert is implemented, local superintendents and local emergency management officials will decide the best course of action to ensure children are protected.

huh?

If McGreevey was a team player, he'd have done this on the day of George Bush's speech to the RNC.

I think that is a bit strong. He certainly wasn't well-loved in NJ (although chatting to people I've met here, people don't seem too angry about him) and the corruption case is presently relatively far from McGreevey himself (although it could move closer, for sure).

One of my objections to him was the way that he used himself in NJ government ads, which was pretty clearly political advertising on the public dime.

I confess...

I love Scrappleface:

quote:
N.J. Governor: "I'm a Gay Adulterous American"
(2004-08-12) -- Civil rights activists nationwide celebrated today's announcement by New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey that he is "a gay adulterous American."

Mr. McGreevey, standing next to his wife, told a packed news conference he had feelings even as a child that he was "different".

"I've been in the closet for many years," he said, "but I'm proud to finally come out and say that I was born a gay adulterer and I have finally embraced who I am."

The governor, who will resign November 15, said he plans to devote himself to lobbying for equal rights for men who cheat on their wives by having homosexual affairs with their subordinates at work.

"It's a civil rights issue," said Mr. McGreevey. "It's about granting freedom and justice to adulterous gay employers who just want to be themselves with their employees."

As for his corruption Chips, it's definitely interesting how the man is being touted for "coming out," and in some places decried as a martyr. The adultery and putting hiring an unqualified, foreign lover in a significant job with the homeland security office has taken a back seat in many cases. To give credit to the NYT, though, they did write an editorial bitching about this.

Also interesting was his comment at the speech: "My truth is that I am a gay american." Hello, post-modernism.

Don't overstate it too much. Nobody's having any parades in his honor.

There has been loads of coverage of this in NJ, as you might expect, and no one is calling him a martyr here, so far as I can see. The main problem is that he gave his lover a job for which he wasn't even qualified, which I have heard repeated on NPR, CNN and MSNBC. Gay people phoned into NPR and said that this wasn't a gay issue, too.

To me, McGreevey obviously cracked under the pressure of being bombarded with black-mail. It just sucks to be his wife...the humiliation she must feel knowing that her husband prefers a man's hand on his ass rather than hers. All I have to say is: I'm sure there are an abundance of guys in Jersey that would love to bang the hell out of you if you feel as if it would make you feel more of a woman. As for the governer: I think you're pretty fucked up to wait 'til November 15th to step down. If you were really thinking about your constituants, you would step down immediately and let them decide who should take your place (via special election). Well, @ least you're playing the part of a pussy...in every respect...YOU BOTTOM!

TBS just ran one of the ads with McGreevey saying 'come out to New Jersey'. Oh, hilarity.
