Also, you'd think these new techniques would bring forth things previously unseen by humans, not replications of mediocre holiday snapshots.

Exactly Wonder. The amount of skill it would take to paint like that is phenomenal. I just can't see the point of having a painting that looks like a photo.

Kees Bruin is another artist that does super-realism. But he mixes up the compositions to create something that is both technically impressive and visually interesting. Check him out:
