PEW PEW PEW ........... France?

quote:
Twelve people have been shot dead at the headquarters of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, say police.

Two masked gunmen are reported to have stormed the offices of the controversial publication, which has previously been attacked over its portrayal of the Prophet Mohammed.

They are believed to have been armed with Kalashnikov rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade.

According to the AFP news agency, the attackers shouted: "We have avenged the prophet."

This should be interesting. The far right in France is already growing in power, and I'd bet this will only strengthen their cause. Almost makes one wonder who supplied the weapons, eh?

If you're not a religious fundamentalist, then drawing cartoons is not blasphemy. Its not the responsibility of everyone else in the world to walk on egg shells so that we don't offend a group of ignorant misguided miscreants.

Fuck em, and the boat they crossed over on.

I don't want to get incarcerated and tortured, so I keep a low online profile.

I've seen on the news the Germans are out in force, now on the news apparently the National Front are doing rather well in France.

I think we made a mistake in ousting Saddam from power, he may have been a dick, but at least he kept the World wide Jihad in check. In a nut shell, Iraq fell into civil war, creeped into Syria, Libya then decided to kick off, then Egypt joined the fun and games, all of a sudden there's a World wide Jihad going on being fuelled by the internet.

Posted by Tuba on 01-08-2015 06:07 PM:

We need more of this jihaddy bullshit, not less. The more they do, the better off it is long term. The middle east and its predominate religion will never progress to where 'Christianity' has without it. Its own people need to rebel against it, just as Christians have and continue to do so. The reality is Muslims behave like old world Christians, in a modern world. They arent uniquely fucked up, theyre just centuries behind.

I doubt they have the support the media suggests, most western Muslims want fuck all to do with prehistoric values, they like the modern world way too much for that. Sooner or later they too will move away from religion and wake up to the reality there is no fucking god. But these things take generations, not simply years or decades.

I feel sorry for the poor bastards that are generations ahead of their fellow countrymen, who at least question the existence of a god, if not outright no longer believe and tend to keep quiet about it as the potential backlash can be quite real. More so on an individual level when that person happens to be a woman/girl.

If everyone publishes those cartoons, the terrorists actually did the opposite of their goal. Instead of thousands seeing them, millions will now because of their actions.

Their goal was to prevent people from seeing those cartoons? Where did that come from?

Good point Mord, although any guesses as to what the goal is with this one ? Couple of misguided chaps throwing their lives away in the interests of ? Brainwashed ?

Posted by Rokkr on 01-09-2015 09:58 PM:

I suspect their goal was to discourage such images from being distributed. I'd also guess there's some retribution aspect as well.

But bottom line, I'm pretty sure the intent was to make those images less likely to occur in future. Which backfired to some degree, although there are lots of media entities too scared to reproduce them.

See, I actually have a hard time believing in the discouraging of distribution narrative, specifically because of the backlash effect. It isn't the first time we've seen that happen and unless you go the "hurr durr dumbass terrorist" route in your thinking, it just doesn't follow.

I did see a tweet from someone who appeared to be fundamentalist Muslim, stating that the spread of the images didn't matter, the death of those men mattered.

Something worth thinking about.

Time and time again, people are underestimating the Streisand Effect.

I can think of a dozen weirdo scenarios that might have played out. But it was probably religious fanatics (file under Brainwashed) who wanted to punish blasphemers and make people afraid of them.
In that case, a spread of the pictures might not be first priority.

But why couldn't they capture them alive is what I want to know, it kind of ruins the whole thing for me.

It is one thing to underestimate the Streisand Effect, it is entirely another to storm an office in broad daylight in Paris, and execute a dozen people. The chances of that not being splashed across headlines worldwide is realistically nil. I mean maybe if Seoul got nuked about the same time it might get lost in the noise, but barring some such massive scale event it was not going to be ignored. Given that, it is really hard to buy into the idea that the backlash wasn't anticipated.

However, if the primary goal was simply to carry a out a death sentence then mission accomplished.

As for them being taken alive, I really don't know enough to speak on it, but it might have provided some insight.
