What's going on with the Mississippi River?

A big chunk of the Mississippi has nearly gone dry - to the point that grain barges (which only require very shallow water) are having to be only partially loaded in order to navigate the stretch from north of St. Louis to just south of Memphis (120+ miles). That stretch of river is so low that in many places you can walk most of a mile out into what is normally flowing river, on dry sand. This, after many tributary rivers north of the area running at normal, or above normal, levels.

That stretch nearly coincides with the New Madrid fault zone, where the largest series of earthquakes in American history occurred. That created Reelfoot Lake virtually overnight, which resulted in the Mississippi running backwards (northward) for some days to fill the depression caused by surface collapse.

Things may get real interesting.
