Hmm?

Ultimately, I must acknowledge that an educated/informed opinion on the matter is above my pay-grade. The problem is exacerbated by my deep mistrust of the media.

A side note:

NEW YORK (AP) — A scientist who raised early alarms about climate change and popularized the term “global warming” has died. Wallace Smith Broecker was 87. ...”. From here.

Amen.

But it is cold here. our idiot provincial premier got rid of emissions testing on cars. He is following in the footsteps of the guy south of the border. Moron thinks coal is ok. I am pretty sad about it... I am wondering how bad things have to get before people start to care

No. Reading. Interesting. Need to reread Bill's passed relating to coal here to see if there is a hydromethanation clause. I suspect not relating to car emissions... but at least I know what to look for now. Thanks Jeb.

Oh, I can assure you that I am substantially more intelligent than you are, LF, but that's another matter.

They called it "Global Warming" until the globe didn't warm and all of their models failed. Then they cleverly changed the name to "Climate Change" which is absurd. It's like saying man is causing gravity. The climate on this planet has been changing every day for the last 4.5 billion years. As for a scientific consensus? No such agreement exists. What does exist is a concerted effort to silence the dissenters, aka "deniers" (aka heretics) from publishing they're dissenting papers in scientific journals within a highly politicized environment that dominates climatology as various interests stand to benefit financially from carbon credit trading and grants that wouldn't exist without this canard.

Look, the very foundation of all scientific study and theory is the existence of a negating element. In other words, in order for a theory to have standing there must be something that proves the hypothesis invalid. There MUST be some observation that will cause the theory to be proven false. So, I'll ask the question I've asked hundreds of times and never gotten a satisfactory answer to. What phenomenon(a) would one have to observe in order to disprove Global Warming? I say Global Warming since that's what we were sold on and no one would argue the the climate has been changing every single day for millenia.

So tell me, what needs to happen to disprove Global Warming to you. Surely there's an answer. If not, then simple scientific methodology confounds this lame theory.

A consensus my ass. I look forward to someone's reply to this very valid scientific inquiry. I'm all ears and I'm not going to argue about this foolishness any more. I'll let the empirical evidence make my arguments for me as time goes by. Sooner or later you and the other cretins who are still sold on this ridiculous lie will have to confess you've been had.

I can tell you, as a hydrologist, that rainfall is increasing globally. This is something that I have to re-quantify every decade or so. The amount of rainfall in Houston, say, that used to be equivalent to the 500-year rainfall event, is now the 100-year.

For those who don't know, the 100-year (or 1%) rainfall is the amount of rainfall that has a 1% chance of being equaled or exceeded every year, or once in 100 years. The 500-year (0.2%) rainfall has a 0.2% chance of being equaled or exceeded in a given year, or once in 500 years. These statistics are determined from real rainfall data.

What all this means is that extreme rainfall events are becoming more common. I'm not one of the people who makes atmospheric/climatic models, but I do have to use the results of their work in my models. I can tell you that something is indeed causing the world to warm. That is what drives these increasingly common rainfall events.

They originally called it "global warming" because the prediction is that the average global temperature was going to increase by some amount. When they realized that lay people thought that meant an impending global desert, they had to change the nomenclature.

Think of it like conservation of energy. In a closed system, the sum of all energies is constant within the boundaries of the system. There may be local imbalances distributed within the boundary, but they all sum to the same constant, always. Likewise, all temperatures everywhere were never predicted to increase forever. It was a global average.

This is a common misconception. Climate is not the same thing as weather. Weather changes on a daily basis. Climate is a trend over time and should be considered more appropriately on a generational basis.

Interestingly, flat earthers make a very similar argument.

To be sure, there are some modes of scientific endeavor that are dismissed out of hand by gatekeepers and it can be very difficult for some really good research to gain traction. But much like the flat earth believers, having a poorly informed understanding of the science behind something does not mean that one's (mis)understanding constitutes better science.

For some reason, I have the feeling that what you really take issue with is the "human cause" element of the original "global warming" warning. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth. I just want to make sure I understand what you mean.

At best, my experience dealing with climate data leads to a few correlations between what was predicted and the changes seen in rainfall and hurricane intensities.

Rainfall intensities in certain parts of Texas are increasing (and in many other places as well). Hurricanes and cyclones grow larger and more powerful nearly every season. And the driving force behind both of those things is temperature.

Warmer temperatures increase evapotranspiration, and a warmer atmosphere has stronger convection currents that produce higher winds and more intense precipitation events (and that includes rain, hail and snow).

Warmer oceans and atmospheres feed moisture and energy into cyclonic events and cause them to grow into environmental disasters that are off the charts. Granted, those charts only go so far back with scientific data, and a little farther with anecdotal data.

Are humans the cause? I have no idea.

Wrong. Hey, believe the shit science if you want, but the empirical evidence betrays the ludicrous theory for the crap it is. You might ask yourself what would have to occur to convince you the GW is false. All theories have a falsifying element. All except global warming/climate change. Oh, and I know exactly what climate is and is not. The fact is, the globe hasn't warmed at all in over 20 years, but who needs facts, right?
