anyone tried a career reboot?

The downturn and my timing on the job market may end up being career stopping for me.

I'm considering going back to university to start my career in a completely new direction.

Anyone tried making a major vocational switch? and would ye mind sharing your thoughts on the experience?

Cheers

I spent about five years in web development, after a few years in offices ended up working from home and eventually started my own business.

I then found out that since I had my own business I could carry around steel all day and get paid even better money without having to deal with clients. Never looked back and don't intend to either. Physical work keeps you young btw.

Im an anthropologist with forensics and demography as my dual specialties.

Denmark is too small to support any kind of "field" that cater to my research interests... so Im doing archaeology now, and finding that im more or less the last person to be hired before the downturn hit. I envision a 20% unemployment rate in archaeology here for the next 3-5 years... so my chances of keeping this line of work are slim to none.

Im considering a 4 year engineering degree, geared towards the prothetics/mobility tech sector (living anatomy instead of forensic anatomy) or alternately any engineering subfield with some employment stability in it. I've considered medicine, but it just takes too damned long.

Im looking for stable employment and some interesting problem crunching opportunities.

Wage level is less important

Interesting. If you can swing school, you should do it. You're in an interesting field but I wouldn't image that you could even move anywhere and find something in this shit economy.

Avondale: making his acquaintance on the internet is something akin to stepping in dogshit.

Friend of mine, Finnish as it goes, works in that sort of field over here, mudded, she pulls in like 60 an hour working for a museum.

So far it has made the last two years a living hell.

she must be in management then. im only making about two thirds of that, or about 50 USD/hour

as an unskilled laborer, my pay would go down to half or so.

no biggie, but unskilled jobs tend to become abit tedious :/

Life sucks man because whatever goddamn career you choose it seems the more successful you get the easier it is for all to come crashing down. I mean I can say I really fucked up my life choosing the DD field as my career choice then it all comes crashing down when I get sick and suddenly my agency cannot afford the rate increase in their health insurance so good bye and thank you for your 15 years of sacrifice without even the audacity to allow me to resign and now any reference from them is bad.
But I still have my host home guy and my wife is doing well so we're actually doing okay but just like all of us we still dream of doing something else.
And do you know what? Other than the priceless memories my so called career gave me which is just a chapter in my life now do you know what job I was very happy with doing? Not airport shuttling or diesel mechanicing but then it was pretty pleasant when I was doing those things.
I was really happy when I delivered pizza's. Yea. I made enough money.
Yes. I kept busy. Sure I racked up some miles in my car but I was fucking happy doing it. And now when I think about it,I was the most happy then because my job meant absolutely nothing when it comes to what the fuck I would lose if I couldn't do that anymore.
Yes. It's twisted sounding but the higher in "status" you are in your job,the higher the pay is,the more of a goddamn slave you are to that field with no chance of ever becoming truly free unless you stick with it,eat shit and luck out that you are still healthy enough at retirement that you can finally enjoy the rest of your life.
At this point of my life I wouldn't mind really if Wal Marts calls me in for an interview. Not being able to work weekends though because of my host home obligations kinda puts a crutch in the whole mess.

That does sound like a fun job but when I see a mousie I scream like a bitch and that would be unprofessional.

I originally went to nursing school,it didn't pan out. Seems I hate to see people in pain. After a year of working in a Trauma Unit,I decided to go back to school. Death is where it's at.

mudded, prosthetology is a fast growing field, but even there I wonder how much opportunity there will be in an economy that can't support subsistence laborers. If you are really interested in that area of research, I can point you at a couple of things - take a look at the open prosthetics project and you'll get some feel for the directions research is moving in.

I think it's great working with a lot of different things during life.

This week I thought it might be fun being a parking attendant for a while.

It does seem like you have a fun job, bacidath.
Sookie,my auntie is a coroner. She says the worst ones are the kids.

Funny it seems like I am at a struggle as to where I should be right now. I mean I feel too young for retirement yet too old for a career reboot.

So I just do what I do. I really should just build that bike and see where it goes but at the same time I don't want the headaches if someone destroys what I have built and wants their money back because I didn't build them a fucking motorcycle.
Yea. That aspect in my life I think best to keep it my joy.

I'd prefer that to factory work or retail. Any day of the week.

On that note, I've gone from factory work to retail. With a vocational qualification included to boot.

It'll do until the shit storm is over.

She's right LF, there's something terribly wrong with burying a child. I can relate though having lost a child myself.

**There is no greater loss than a loss of a child in my opinion.
