Vegas, baby, Vegas: Asylum July 2010 Mega-Pissup

So, it sounds like the most general interest for Asylum Pissup 2010 is in Las Vegas. Barring any other consensus, Vegas it is.

The 28th falls on a Wednesday next year, so probably the 29th-1st (Thursday through Sunday) would be the official pissup weekend. Mark your calendars!

I mentioned in one of the other threads that I think it would make sense if a few people who knew for sure they are going to make it come hell or high water took some initiative and stepped forward as being willing to do some of the early legwork---finding some hotels, making some calls about group rates, that sort of thing. This thread is not evidence of me taking said initiative.

Lanin, CRSR, Pinecricka, and travis all showed pretty good interest, so striking travis from that list that's three people that might make suitable early torch-bearers. Anyone else with some follow through want to give it a shot (ignatz? morgana? I dunno, whoever?). Anybody know Vegas real well and/or have a desire to play travel agents?

I think that's the first order of business. But also, just kind of throwing things out there to do. I think it'd be fun to have at least one outdoors sort of outing, and lanin named a number of them. The Grand Canyon would be cool.

Pinecrika will probably also be willing to host a trip to a really scary looking firing range that has group packages where you can rent and shoot machine guns and grenade launchers apparently.

And it being Vegas, there's all kinds of other shit to do.

Also, July 2010 is the DeafNation World Expo. So, it's got that going for it.

Myself, I may try to see a fight if there's anything going on that weekend the tickets to which would be within the galaxy of my price range.

Anyway, throw in your two cents. Also, 100 class points to the person who eventually decides to play organizer (not it).

We need to call up garycoleman. I'd bet he knows a good spot to bury hookers too.

Also, Grand Canyon and or Hoover Dam would be cool.

Any Indian reservations nearby we could volunteer at one day? You know, administering insulin and stuff.

Although I have mentioned before that Vegas will probably not happen for us, due to a number of factors(and before you start in on it again - we had been planning on doing the PacNW pissup long before Vegas was even mentioned. It is UNRELATED to Vegas, so bug off. Thanks) we will try to be there. With the much higher expense and amount of time it would take for us, it is unlikely, but we will try.
Ignatz has already said she's planning on going to Vegas also(so get off her back, too).

That said, if we go, we would definitely want to do the Grand Canyon thing.
But Brett was asking about proximity. How close is the canyon to Vegas? I've never been to either, and they are in different states - so does anyone know how long of a drive it is from one to the other?

Tourist areas tend to freak me out, so if I'm doing the tourist thing, I personally would like the more natural, outdoorsy settings. Canyons, parks, pretty stuff.

We may do one show, as long as it's not Wayne Newton. A comedy show would be awesome, if any comedians(that aren't Paula Poundstone) happen to be in the area at the time.

I wouldn't mind seeing some boxing, but the price would be way out of our range. If we come into some serious money, then yeah. Count us in for that.

Of course, we would want everyone gathered at one point, for a meal or drinks or a picnic - something.

At this point, someone with travel know-how(not us... we don't travel much) should come back in here with a list of hotel prices.

Are you guys definitely settled on the date as the 29th to the 1st?
That sounds fine to us.

South entrance to Grand Canyon is maybe 3-4 hours from Vegas proper...maybe less. There is also Bryce and Zion which rival the Canyon in terms of day hikes...and maybe even in overnights...I dunno, personally I like Zion more than any others but I do overnight back-country stuff...but Zion is maybe an hour or two from Vegas and as someone who has been to pretty much every national park in the US and seen most of what they have to offer its one of my favorites...

Honestly, I would stay away from the Canyon if you want to get out and hike...if you just want to drive a bunch of cars down windy roads, be in a crowd and generally do the lame family vacation thing then go for it...but the only fun I had in the Canyon was in it which means you hike down into it...which means you will either hike back up out of it or across it and then back up out of it. So if you dont hike, or dont like it, dont bother. Just look at the view(which is spectacular, dont get me wrong) and keep moving...

Probably THE coolest thing to do in Las Vegas. But then, the strip and all the tacky tourist casinos are about the furthest thing from interesting to me. Save Sigfried and Roy's tigers at whatever hotel they're kept.

Also, remember it will be 100-115 degrees in July. Dress accordingly and bring shoes that are made for walking. The good news is, it is a dry heat.

Vegas doesn't really do group rates unless you are planning on hundreds of rooms. July is off season and rooms on the Strip can be had as low as $70 per night (in hotels you actually might want to stay in.) You can find some "lesser" acommodations in the $50ish rate.

I am pretty familiar with the area having lived around it for a couple of years. As we get closer and I see my availability, I would be willing to help out.

I think that's the first order of business. But also, just kind of throwing things out there to do. I think it'd be fun to have at least one outdoors sort of outing, and lanin named a number of them. The Grand Canyon would be cool.

As Eatme mentioned, Zion's N.P. is about 3 hours away. Bryce would be about 5 or 6. I can show you a spot on the Grand Canyon that you can literally look straight down thousands of feet without a handrail. Ask Simon, he's seen it.

There is also the Valley of Fire State Park that is about an hour North of Vegas and worth seeing. It sits by the north end of Mead which would feel good after hiking around the redrocks.

Mt. Charleston is a great hike and offers some escape from the heat. It is about an hour outside of Vegas.

Pinecrika will probably also be willing to host a trip to a really scary looking firing range that has group packages where you can rent and shoot machine guns and grenade launchers apparently.

Cricka will be busy at the peep show on the old Strip.

Yeah...this is really important! It cannot be stressed enough. In and around Las Vegas gets just as hot if not hotter than Southern Arizona.

More like anything between 90-120 is possible and planning on it being near the higher end of that scale is the prudent thing to do. On really hot days (July) it can easily stay near 100 well in to the night... 10:00pm or later. That "Dry Heat" things is for "Suckers" it's more like a "Blast Furnace" in lower elevations that are FLAT lands(see:Vegas). I lived outside of Phoenix in the desert for 3 years!

Mt Charleston sound cool!

Options are:

Do what you're gonna do outside EARLY
Get to higher elevation (in the Mountains, any mountains) it's a good cure for the mid-day heat.
During the day get where you're going and plan indoor activities
Stay in frigid cool Casinos and Hotels and ride indoor roller coasters.

Red Rock is one of my all time favorite places and it's pretty close to Vegas. Then again, in the middle of July, it's bound to be a scorcher. Perhaps staying downtown is cheaper--it'd be more like an old school Vegas outing there anyway. Though, there is a lot of sketchyness there. My sister-in-law seems enamored with staying at Hooters all the time--she loves Vegas (basically spends as many vacations there as she can--and she planned her wedding in Vegas, not just an eloping thing like what my wife and I did) and always travels on the cheap there, so we may want to look at Hooters. It's not exactly on the strip, but it's not in downtown, either. I have a friend who works at the Venetian, but I doubt he can get us anything--last time I asked him about stuff, he said that the Venetian and Palazzo along with maybe Wynn and Encore are stingy with their comps, leaving those more for either whales or large corporate events.

So, look to Hooters or maybe Tropicana if you want to stay some place cheap and still sort of be on the strip. I'm not sure, but maybe Excalibur can give a good deal, too. Luxor's a great place if you want to commit suicide and stun a bunch of people on the gambling floor. I guess you can do that at Planet Hollywood, too--though, not from your front door like in Luxor.

Posted by mmmtravis on 05-18-2009 05:05 AM:

I've stayed at Luxor, and it was suitably cheesy without being dirty in an excalibur/tropicana sort of way. Believe it or not, my vote is NOT for Hooters. I went their once at 5am on a Sunday and they didn't have any chicken wings anywhere in the fucking hotel. Hooters sucks. But yeah, wherever is cheap on/near the strip is cool

Isn't there anyone on this place that is rated in Vegas? We have enough druggies, drunks, and sex addicts, where are all our gamblers?

You know what? Now that I think about it, I've never had any goddamned wings while I was at Hooters. Though, I'm pretty sure there's a restaurant. I ate there before the hotel was converted to Hooters.

Posted by fubar on 05-18-2009 05:19 AM:

Hooters is almost always short on wings and chicks. And if they ever do have either, they are of extremely poor quality.

i like their shitty ass over breaded wings. i mean, they are disgusting, but they are a nice change of pace once every few months or so. as are the tacky but breasty waitresses.

I've never seen a Hooters waitress that impressed me. And as if the food isn't disgusting enough, I have to try to eat this food after staring at her pus-covered tits.

When I was 17 one of my friends got engaged and we hired a stripper to come over for his bachelor party. She arrived and was a mediocre redhead. She immediately knocked him onto the couch on the opposite side of the room from us and started stripping in his lap. After she got naked, she got on her knees in the floor in front of him and tried to undo his pants with her teeth. While I was trying to take photos, one of the other guys quietly walked up behind her and said "Hey man. Get a picture of this."

He put made two fists, stuck out his thumbs, and made like he was popping a pimple on her ass. But when I zoomed in closer I saw that it wasn't a pimple. It was fucking Krakatoa. The whitehead on it was the size of a dime, and was all shiny. It glistened in the fluorescent glory.

After she blew my friend, she started lap dancing all the guys in the room and tried to kiss them. When she got to me, I noticed that her chest looked like that dude's face from Dune. I pushed her out of my lap and started dry heaving. She quickly got up, asked for her money, and left.

The next night, the same group of guys went to the Hooters in the West End. And guess who our waitress was.

Cheap stays.

Hooters and Stratosphere seem to be go to places for decent affordable accommodations. Hooters turns up in a lot of discount lists.....they must be in real need. Thats a good thing! also....Any hotel with the word "Station" in it's name is CHEAP.

Also something to note....to even remain in business some of the old school Vegas hotels have had to completely renovate ALL their rooms.

Posted by lanin on 05-18-2009 07:29 AM:

Here's a hypothetical stay of a week in late July 2009 (Wed 22 - Tue 28). I would personally stay 7 days 6 nights because I dont see ever going back after this trip. I intend to get my fill of Vegas in July 2010. These nightly numbers are single occupancy and reflect an averaged down rate including the weekend nights. Most hotels bump 20%-30% on the weekend only stays if there is not at least one weeknight stays.

Nows a good time to hear experiences good or bad from any of these hotels.

It should be noted that you could stay in a sumptuous resort setting at one of the new modern off-strip gems...The Green Valley Ranch Resort. Booking direct in advance is $75 per night weeknights then it jumps on fri-sat to $130......this is a normally $250 a night room. I might stay at a resort. Maybe Red Rock Resort has discounts.

I've only stayed at MGM and Luxor. Both were good, MGM was better. Neither were anything like a Wynn or a Bellagio. I did see Howie Mandel at the MGM, if that's a plus?
