I was bemused to see adverts in the US for cars offering 'interest free credit' on one price and then a cheaper price for cash. Which can't really make anyone think that it is really interest free credit in any sensible way (although you'd think that they would stop it if it didn't work).

Ah, in the UK that would have to be 'old fashioned' or 'antique style' given that 'antique' means something particular. Thus Phil's question.
Although I know an antiques enthusiast who went to the US and said what goatboy said, which is to say that 'antique' means the same as 'old crap' as far as many of the antiques fairs that she attended were concerned.
