suicidegirls.com

this website was the subject of chat tonight, so i thought i would open a thread on it.

http://suicidegirls.com/tour/

rather than put forth the arguments for why i see it as a social ill at this time, i'd be curious to hear others' thoughts first.

is this website a good or bad reflection on our society? is it a good or bad trend for society? is it something which upon which a judgment should be withheld? etc.

don't give a shit about it. The type of people that would complain about it are the same type of people that write letters to the TV channels complaining that the word "bastard" was said at 11.30pm on a Sunday night.

Society would have the same content, regardless of sites like these.
Now it is just out in the open.

As long as things are consentual, it is none of my business what other people indulge in.

Social life is not a zero sum game IMHO

I think it's a better trend than many others.

I mean, it's rather harmless and the people typically are of above average intelligence.

Not sure on what grounds any sort of value judgement would be made. Do you mean the name "suicidegirls"? Or porn in general? Or alternative cultures? Or are you talking about euphorbia's claim that they wallow in their own problems (which I didn't see substantiated by the free tour and poking around the forum a bit, though granted I didn't look hard) (wait...)

I'm not really familiar with the site, so I guess I'm just not picking up on in what way its any different from, say, www.camwhores.com, plus an active forum. Is there something about it I'm missing?

It's just basically pin-up-style porn with a forum and interviews.

I'm not sure why it's viewed as TRENDY or even, uh, a reflection at all.

In the DFW area there are numerous billboards with a white family all smiling and cheery claiming that the Chrisitian radio station 94.1KVIL is "Safe for the whole family!"...when in fact, I think it is a brainwashing, conniving tool hidden beneath sheeps clothing, and on a personal level I disagree with what they stand for, but respect them for the diversity they provide. I'll put aside my personal views and fight against censorship of 94.1, if ever it faced such judgment, which of course it won't. I do not believe certain lifestyles can be viewed as social ills or poor reflections on society unless they are harmful in particular ways, and even that can be challenged. In contrast, I believe the diversity of a society makes it healthier. The way I see it, moral corruption is not harmful to society unless it provokes harm against others. Emotional harm and physical harm of a "trend" should be examined if something should be considered harmful and dangerous to a society or judgment be handed out. Certain lifestyles and trends are blamed for a lot of things, especially the polluting of societies, but this is an unfair assumption. To pass judgment on a lifestyle is based primarily on the fact that it is not your personal preferance in which to live, and therefore the belief that it is not the right lifestyle because it differes from your own belief structramble ramble stop.

One of the weirdest things about US society is the fact that you can't drink alcohol until you are 21 and, in fact, that law is taken relatively seriously by local police in many areas. Madness. I'm not sure that that is the sign of a healthy relationship with the young.

I agree. For good examples of healthy relationships with the young I'd say one should look to Catholic Church.

well i'm far from an authority on the subject, but i'd bet sans traffic infractions the first impression the vast majority of youths have of the police is themselves or their friends getiting busted for a substance they shouldnt have. (universally)

hell, they can't even sell hard liquor in most areas of Texas due to the dry and partially-dry counties... for instance, in order for me to serve you a white russian at work you have to buy a special "club card" that allows you to have hard liquor on the table... as well, you can't buy beer or wine, let alone the harder drinks anywhere (gas stations, grocery stores etc). If you are lucky, they might have beer or wine...and even if you do manage to get that hard liquor on your table, you can't have more than one drink at a time, and the ounzes of booze are limited so you can't get one giant drink... yay for the bible belt

per person... but, for instance, let's say you are at a bar and they have to stop serving booze at 2am but are open until 6... so you want to buy a couple beers for the rest of the night, no can do hooptyhoo

Ah, here last call is at two, but really they stop serving at 1:45 and throw everyone out at two. We can order margaritas as big as your head though (which I would have thought plentiful in TX, being as it is practially in Mexico and, as they say, everything is bigger).

no, it sucks and the police take it so seriously because its an emotional topic pushed by politically active and powerful groups.
Its certainly a more contemptible thing to me that things like TIPS and such.

As far as suicide girls go, Ive already posted my opinion, which regulars there have said was an unfair evaluation considering im not a member and after reading the "im so broken" “Im so angsty” parts of a few profiles I laughed and left. I have a problem with victim mentality, I have no problem with nudity. If its true that the victim mentality is not a central theme there and I liked tits and twats or porn in general Id probably go. I think sex is beautiful, I don’t find porn sexy though, its usually laughable. I don’t think naked pictures of women do any harm to society no.

i dont think that the suicidegirls website reflects upon american society much at all. i mean its an internet community i guess where people pay to hook up, and look at pr0n and stuff, and if people want to do that, thats fine by me. that in and of itself is not a reflection upon american society as a whole imho

now, im not too familiar with the website asides from the bagillion spam and popup ads i get for the side and promtly delete/close, but i really dont get the significance of the name suicidegirls? i mean are these people really close to killing themselves, or do they just seek attention (which i find very likley), or is it just a marketing play (even more likley)?

but yeah, so long as people arent slitting their wrists online, i have no problem

Recently someone (I think it was JeffK or one of the other somethingawful clowns) had this huge rant about how the internet allowed Furries to congregate and get deeper into their little fantasy life. The premise was that this particular "lifestyle" was wrong, deranged, etc., whatever. The author basically shortcircuited himself by concluding, in effect, "But, it's impossible to judge anything because all truth is subjective, but I still hate them, rah rah for my team, fuck die auslander." In other words, playing directly into Lu's argument.

The suicidegirls site is full of girls with the aforementioned victim mentality...which may be real or may be manufactured to "empower" them. They use sexualized behavior as a form of control; people flock to their site to drool over their porn and they have this little cult following.

While I can't say that there is any obvious damage occurring here, surely this is not the best of circumstances for young women to be in. Is there any chance they're going to grow out of it? Learn to deal with people? I dunno, I certainly hope so.

There is of course the argument that says "Hey I love diversity so I respect whatever choice people make." No offense, but to me that sounds an awful lot like "I will allow people to make whatever decisions they want because in the end I don't give enough of a fuck about them to care what happens to them."
