Oil spill: Gulf of Mexico disaster 'growing by the moment'

quote:
Atlanta Capping the renegade wellhead spewing 42,000 gallons of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico will take an unprecedented effort by British Petroleum and federal agencies, who face mounting difficulties to contain the oil spill that threatens both environmental and political disaster.

The explosion, the sinking, and now the spill from the Transocean Deepwater Horizon oil rig couldn't have come at a worse time for President Obama and other proponents of expanding deepwater oil exploration off the US.

Though the accident is largely an aberration for the industry, which has made significant safety improvements during the past 40 years, it has raised tensions in states that could be affected by the president's decision last month to expand offshore drilling.

What unlucky timing. Right after people were told how safe this was and that accidents rarely happen. Which I guess is true. But it looks bad.

I was thinking that same thing today. The Powers That Be have been talking about tapping in to oil sources off the eastern coast. Might be a bit more difficult to get support for that now.

Obama perpetrated 4/21. The video clearly shows a controlled demolition was used to bring down the platform. Wake the fuck up, sheeple!

the good news is that the sunbathers in the gulf will no longer need to bring suntan oil. It is now provided as a courtesy.

BP welcomes military help for larger Gulf oil leak

VENICE, La. A massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that has become far worse than initially thought crept toward the coast Thursday as government officials offered help from the military to prevent a disaster that could destroy fragile marshlands along the shore.

An executive for BP PLC, which operated the oil rig that exploded and sank last week, said on NBC's "Today" that the company would welcome help from the U.S. military.

"We'll take help from anyone," BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said.

The Coast Guard has urged the company to formally request more resources from the Defense Department.

But time may be running out: Oil from the spill had crept to within 12 miles of the coast, and it could reach shore as soon as Friday. A third leak was discovered, which government officials said is spewing five times as much oil into the water as originally estimated about 5,000 barrels a day coming from the blown-out well 40 miles offshore.

Suttles had initially disputed the government's estimate, and that the company was unable to handle the operation to contain it.

But early Thursday, he acknowledged on "Today" that the leak may be as bad as the government says. He said there was no way to measure the flow at the seabed and estimates have to come from how much oil makes it to the surface.

If the well cannot be closed, almost 100,000 barrels of oil, or 4.2 million gallons, could spill into the Gulf before crews can drill a relief well to alleviate the pressure. By comparison, the Exxon Valdez, the worst oil spill in U.S. history, leaked 11 million gallons into Alaska's Prince William Sound in 1989.

I can't believe that there is not an engineering safe guard for this. Some sort of valve at the source or something.

I'm tempted to blame Greenpeace, but they would probably do it off the coast of Texas instead.

I've never known greenpeace to kill any one. Or even ELF even though they have burned things down. It's bad press.

I think it was just an accident.

Great news! I found the receipt for the purchase of Louisiana in the Library of Congress. We should return it to France and get our $15 million back.

BP needs to be fined out the ass for this bullshit. They take the profits from sales, they take the risk when they absolutely ruin the gulf coast with oil. They should be responsible for every dollar it costs to clean and contain this mess...they also need to do a full review of safety features which were supposed to stop this sort of shit from happening...not on the rig itself but the valve that should have closed off this leak after the accident.

But none of that will happen...what will happen is that my gas prices will go up and BP will be fully reimbursed by their insurance.

Taxpayers (even non-drivers) will pay for the government's share of the cleanup.

The food you eat and things you buy still have oil either in them or to deliver them. Being a nondriver doesn't mean anything.
