quote:Originally posted by GoFuckYourselves! Carl Reiner said that Jolson was a "rotten bastard" in real life. I've read where other people have said the same thing.
That really doesn’t tell us anything, though. After all, Reiner sired Meathead.
I’m no authority on Jolie, but the lengthy wiki article suggests to me that, like so many other past figures, he has come to be unfairly judged, even condemned, by present day PC zealots and virtue signalers. Deceased people, such as Jolie, are prime rant targets and screech-fodder for these assholes, due in large part to two things: The dead can’t talk back; and the public is largely uninformed.
This is interesting;
“Many in the black community welcomed The Jazz Singer, and saw it as a vehicle to gain access to the stage. Audiences at Harlem's Lafayette Theater cried during the film, and Harlem's newspaper, Amsterdam News, called it "one of the greatest pictures ever produced." For Jolson, it wrote: "Every colored performer is proud of him."...”. From here.
" Future years will never know the seething hell and the black infernal background of countless minor scenes and interiors, (not the official surface courteousness of the Generals, not the few great battles) of the Secession war; and it is best they should notthe real war will never get in the books." ~ Walt Whitman
