Where did you end up?

Been away a while, other than coming back when people die (those people don't need to say where they ended up) and I was wondering what happened in people's lives over the last 10 years or so (other than dying). Some of it I know (from facebook, etc), but other bits I don't.

For myself, from starting on asylum when I was doing a PhD in London, I ended up with a PhD, married with two kids, living in upstate NY and doing programming/data wrangling for science data (just about to start my fourth job doing that, in fact).

How about the rest of you?

Mostly astronomy stuff, so finding astronomical sources in the data, which means we have to keep it safe, send it around and store and display the results of the processing.

When will we find an earth-like planet, and how far away will it be?

Most people would claim we've found earth-like planets, unless you mean when will we see one and know there's oceans, trees, breathable atmosphere, etc, in which case I am not sure when we'd ever know that. Within "tens or hundreds of light years" is my guess for distance.

I mostly work with galaxies, stars and their remnants, however.

That sounds pretty awesome, git.
I'm slowly re-entering the job market after being a delusionary vegetable (pause for hecklers), and is now a librarian at the high school where I went many a moon ago, right next to the Roskilde Cathedral.

Gave up my job, bought a small piece of SW France, gathered all of my immediate family from around the world and use them as free labor to farm.

I grow/raise my own food, I spend every day with my kids, and want for nothing.

Quit my PhD 2/3 of the way through
then contract archaeology in the UK
Started a family and promptly got lost in the pits of clinical depression.
Went from land whale to ham planet
Started a BSC in engineering
Got bariatric gastric bypass surgery this april, lost my spring semester to complications, and am finally on the mend 105-ish lbs lighter still in weight shedding mode.

Life is strange.

I still shoot birds at the airport because that's still easier to explain than what I really do.

I still own more snakes and guns (in aggregate) than the state of rhode island.

I'm also still single and unmarriable in East Texas but that's to do with morality and philosophy and you math-types have no point of reference for such nonsense. Please go back to measuring gravitational pull on visible light and I'll go back to shooting armadillos and tending bees.

Not at all. In fact, yours may be significantly more shallow at the end of the day.

You're so awesome, dear troll. I could never hope to equal your achievements and your wisdom. I'm just happy that you give me some attention before it's too late.

Apart from that, it's nice to work at a high school because the kids laugh all the time, except those weeks where they are paralyzed with fear. It's good for the soul.
It's different than teaching at that language school. They were laughing a lot too, but frequently you had to deal with people who were tortured by authorities. Or their orphan children who had traveled through europe hidden in a trunk, etc.

Most people here know all of this from Facebook, but general update:

Moved to Seattle in early 2008.
Had fun there for a few years, then bought a house in the Greensboro area of NC in early 2012.

Been married to Brett for almost 10 years now.

Our daughter turns 9 next week. She's hilarious, and an amazing artist.

My son is 16 now - starts college for Aeronautical Engineering next month.

Have a large Chihuahua that constantly gets mistaken for other breeds(Rottweiler puppy is oddly common) when we're out on walks.

I abandoned all my prior degrees/education and went back to school again for something that actually interested me.

Currently, I write freelance for Health related magazines, am a Nutritionist, and own a Personal Fitness Training business.

Absolutely love my work, and love being in charge even more.

NC is awesome(except for their craptastic Southern politics).
I plan on staying here - especially since the area is becoming more like my ideal every day.

I don't come to Asylum much at all anymore. Just the occasional check-in. A few times per month, unless something catches my interest.

EDIT to add:
I'm hoping to eventually have my PhD in Kinesiology, and teach in that dept at either UNCG or HPU.
I've found that I love Exercise Science even more than Nutrition - which I never expected.
Check with me in another 10 years. Maybe I'll be there, or close to it.

I completed my career as a supply chain consultant and up-rooted my family from Atlanta to Roanoke, VA. Complete change of lifestyle pace. Now I run a warehouse for a world wide fly fishing, hunting , and upscale country living retailer.

Increasing my acting career at a community theatre, playing a little golf, learning to fly fish, and shoot skeet.

Family is doing well. My wife of 24 years is working and playing tennis whenever she can. My oldest son is contemplating moving to Roanoke from Atlanta and my youngest son is holed up in his bedroom most of the time playing League of Legends and other online activities.

i'm not sure what prompted the snark since I'm always so nice to you, but oh well. I will say kudos to you for dealing with the difficult stories on a daily basis. That would be trying to a normal person's mind, so I'm pretty impressed that your radically diminished intellect is able to cope with the emotions of the situation without getting snarky when you talk to really great people....wait....I see now.
