People love control. If most people knew of a leash around their neck directing where to go, they would wish it cut. If dogs were the same as people, they'd wish their leash cut too. This would not benefit the dog. The dog would end up being hit by a car or lost chasing a cat.
The Seven Samurai was written from the perspective of the aristocracy. The message of that movie was that the Japanese elite existed to sacrifice themselves for their people. The movie itself powerfully reinforced that sense of duty and sacrifice among Japanese elite. It is the Japanese peasants that were inconstant and untrustworthy - at times disloyal and self interested. But in times of danger and external threat, the Japanese elite would always rally to defend them.
Our own elite are anything but guardians. They do not treat people nearly as well as we treat our dogs.
